Use of WMS GetFeatureInfo

HI all.
I've been looking at the WMS GetFeatureInfo example, and I noticed
that the WMSGetFeatureInfo component is used on a WFS layer. Can it
also be used on a WMS layer?. The WMS layer does not have
"capabilities" or "useCapabilities" properties.
Could someone explain in more detail how to use the WMSGetFeatureInfo
component?
