As always, I enjoy these tips - but this time I am a tad lost....

Do I SET.PRIVATE.SERVER on both the client and the server or - which one?
 And the 'addr' - is that the address of the server or the address of the client?

SET.PRIVATE.SERVER PHONE.HOME 101.228.1.19 administrator phonein

the above example command is executed on the 'remote/local' desktop
'PHONE.HOME' is a name for the server
101.228.1.19 is a valid IP to connect to the 'mother' QM system
administrator is the login
phonein is the password

once the above is executed, you can:

QMSERVER = PHONE.HOME ; ACCTNAME = "QMSYS" ; FLNAME = "TEMP"
FNAME = QMSERVER:":":ACCTNAME:":":FLNAME

OPEN FNAME TO HOST.FL ELSE....

remember the above example is 'happening' on the remote/local desktop that is wanting to phone home

works so well, it's almost erie
good luck!
