there is an example link reference scheme to:

Unfortunately, this URL is an empty link.

Furthermore, are other links possible in the eg, such as:
http://www.bic.org.uk/7/BIC-Standard-Subject-Categories

Interesting question. I've been wondering whether these links are symbolic like namespaces...(?)

Read the Atom spec if you'd like more information about that part: http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4287#section-4.2.2

There's nothing new or specific about it in the OPDS spec itself.
