This is certainly a cool idea. I got a chance to meet these guys at
the Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards (http://
www.popularmechanics.com/breakthrough07) this year, and talked to them
about the application to our project. They were using the device to
"print" hors d'oeuvres at the reception, which was pretty clever, I
thought. In any case, the materials that they can use at this point,
coupled with the resolution, which is not yet as good as the similar
commercial fused deposition processes (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fused_deposition_modeling), mean that it is probably not quite ready
to impact our situation here. A similar project is discussed here:
http://reprap.org/bin/view/Main/WebHomeThat said, the basic concept that rapid prototyping techniques can be
used for mass customized production and the manufacture of prosthetic
components is one we believe has great potential, and one we're
pursuing with regard to the Trautman hook, discussed in on the main
OPP site (http://www.openprosthetics.org/concepts/55/the-trautman-
hook).
