What design would you recommend for X,Y,Z moving.
I was thinking about makerslide but in FAQ is not recommended.
Is there any drawing of that used design?
Thanks

I used a Zenbot CNC machine as the basis for mine.

For V2 I'll probably just use the mounted linear rails from the Chinese,
12mm should be fine for the light load on these. Use the mounted for X
and Y, use unmounted for Z. A doesn't require rails.

The OpenPnP machine design which I am working on is not yet finished. It's not that I don't recommend MakerSlide in general, it's just that I have chosen not to use it in my design. There's no reason others can't use it.

The unfinished OpenPnP design is done in SketchUp and can be downloaded from http://code.google.com/p/openpnp/source/browse/hardware/OpenPnP.skp if you would like to take a look.

Richard,do you think , Makerslide is not good enough that you want to use the mounted linear rails from the Chinese?

I actually looked into using 8020 aluminum extrusions as the rails for
my pick and place. Frankly, they are not strait. If you take two of them
and put them up against each other they will rock, and you can see light.

I don't see how Makerslide would be any better, as they are aluminum
extrusions as well.

Also, not sure about running bearings on aluminum. Even at light loads.

Also, I was under the impression that Makerslide isn't available yet.

The Zenbot I used uses square steel tubing with roller bearings. While
it has some drawbacks, it was a quick way to get one working.

I'm thinking something like hardened 16mm fully supported rail with open
bearings for X and Y, and 16mm non-supported for Z. not sure of the
mounting of Y yet, but thinking about it.

Something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2X-SBR16-900mm-16MM-FULLY-SUPPORTED-LINEAR-RAIL-SHAFT-4-SBR16UU-Rounter-Bearing-/251007899620?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a713c97e4

(this guy actually has quite a bit of stuff I may buy...)

Yes, it's not free. But we are building PHP machines to assemble circuit
boards to make money. *some* expense is justified... :-)

Plus, don't the low end commercial machines run in the $10k range? If
bought the rails from this guy, bought the electronics, etc, we are
still something like 1/5 the price of the commercial ones.

Found a place to purchase "Makerslide" I will give them the benefit of
the the doubt.

Bought six pieces at 1200mm

When it comes in and I've had a chance to look at it I'll report back
to the group.
