I think the problem with these driver issues (ie people not realising
they need modified Kinect version) is a consequence of the grey area
that exists with regards using Kinect sensor on computers right now. I
expect PrimeSense have to be very careful about these issues, and they
cannot really talk about the Kinect-compatible driver version and they
probably have to be very careful how they even mention the word
Kinect. (all they can really say is that Microsoft is a customer using
the PrimeSense hardware for the Kinect sensor). And as I mentioned
before, the term Kinect does not just mean the sensor, it is also
software which Microsoft have made which is nothing to do with
PrimeSense really.
One thing that could help this situation is if we have an unofficial
OpenNI website of some sort where we do not have to worry about issues
with mentioning the Kinect Sensor-enabled version of the driver. There
are already sites which explain what files people need, its just
people may not find these instructions until they have spent time
getting the wrong driver & having problems and having to ask for help.
