Hi all,

as far as I understand the concept of OpenNI is that there is no real
functionality (in terms of segmentation, tracking, machine vision) in
OpenNI itself but the algorithmic stuff is going on in the middleware
NITE, which I wasn't able to find any source code supplied, will that
happen, and what is the license situation for that ?
I am still thinking about continuing our own SDK for skeleton
segmentation, but the solution of NITE seems quite solid, some flaws
in some extreme situations but a proper work to go, the only question
which remains for me is will it be opensourced and under what terms...
Difficult times to compete in a global age.

From my reading, anyone can provide middleware for OpenNI. I think NITE is PrimeSense's commercial middleware (that is, it's how they make their money). I signed up for a developer kit from them which I believe comes with NITE. I'm interested in creating a wall-sized gesture-driven information hub using their product.

Hi Robert,

NITE is indeed PrimeSense's OpenNI compliant middleware product and as
for now it is not released as open source. The supported systems are
Windows and Linux and the R&D team at PrimeSense is now evaluating OSX
due to community requirements.

The license for NITE allows re-distribution of the redist version and
also free usage of the NITE SDK.
OpenNI compliant NITE can be downloaded from PrimeSense's website:
http://www.primesense.com/?p=515 and a free to use key for the
community can be found on www.openni.org.That key is:

hope this helps!

Tamir,

I'm glad to hear that OpenNI is taking off in such an exciting way, and glad to hear PrimeSense is taking OSX seriously as a platform. As Diederick mentioned, a few of us have been working hard, and gotten openni to compile and run on OSX. You can see more on Diederick's webpage at http://roxlu.com .

I just wanted to introduce ourselves to you, and say that if your team need any help getting up to speed on OSX development, feel free to contact any of us.

I can't wait to get some natural interaction projects started on my mac =). Thanks for all the enthusiasm and support.
