OK,
If someone can help me with this, I swear I'll name my first born
after you.

1) I have Windows 7 64 bit running
2) I followed this tutorial (to the T, twice, Including the XMLs):
http://www.kinecthacks.nl/kinect-tutorial-3-setting-up-openni-and-nite-on-windows-for-kinect/
3) I installed the following kinect drivers: https://github.com/avin2/SensorKinect
4) I installed the latest UNSTABLE versions of the openNI Binaries.

In the device manager under PrimeSencse I can see Kinect Audio, Camera
and Motor

In "Devices and Printers" I can see an XBOX NUI AUDIO device listed

So...

I run the Samples and the command prompt flashes and vanishes, except
for NiViewer 64, which givers me;

"PrimeSense/SensorV2/5.0.3.4: The device is not connected"

So I uninstall everything, run C Cleaner, reboot, and redo everything
with the STABLE versions, no dice.

I create a new partition and install Windows 7 32 bit and I have the
same issue, except the command prompt just flashes up and vanishes in
ALL cases.

Please, if someone can comment, call me an idiot and tell me what I've
done wrong I'll be entirely grateful

Well finally i made it!! the problem was that i downloaded
redistributable version, from this link:
http://www.openni.org/downloadfiles/opennimodules/openni-compliant-hardware-binaries/31-latest-unstable
And seems to not work with the redistributableversion
You need the develop version from this link:
https://github.com/avin2/SensorKinect/tree/unstable/Bin

Cheers!!!

Hi Campi.

I followed your advice.

1. Uninstalled the PrimeSense drivers from the Device Manager
2. Unplugged Kinect
3. Downloaded from https://github.com/avin2/SensorKinect/tree/unstable/Bin
4. Installed dpinst-amd64
5. Connected Kinect (Kinect Motor, Kinect Audio, and Kinect Camera
installed automatically)
6. Ran .exe sample programs on OpenNI\Samples\Bin64\Release

Same result... "The device is not connected".

Help. :(

As per the other thread, have you checked that power is connected? Just because the light is blinking it does not confirm this. Try uninstalling all openni and drivers, then installing the Microsoft Kinect SDK. If that also fails, then your hardware is probably at fault.

Hi Erlend Cleveland,

Thanks for your response. The power supply of my Kinect is plugged in
and is getting power from the socket. Also, I have a 2nd Kinect which
I use to play XBOX games. That one works because I use it to play
Kinect Sports on the XBOX daily. I plugged that one on the Win 7 PC
(with the power supply), let the drivers install automatically (Kinect
Motor, Kinect Audio, Kinect Camera installed successfully), and ran
the OpenNI sample programs again (NiUserTracker64.exe and
NiSimpleRead64.exe). Got the same exact result. :(

Your OS is 64-bit? I've seen some posts online saying SensorKinect
drivers are not working for 64-bit. :(

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Have you tried the 32 bit drivers? I'm running Win 7 64bit with the 32 bit drivers, and haven't had any problems.

I have found the Kinect to be very picky about USB ports; on two
different PCs of mine it will not work on some ports, period. Try
moving it around to different ports. On one PC it will only work with
the front-panel USBs. On that PC I installed a dedicated USB card for
it, but it won't work with that card either.

I expect since MS intended this for just the XBox, they did not
design/QA their USB interface for general ports.

Some investigation would probably reveal what USB chips do and don't
work with the Kinect.

Good luck!

Hi Erlend,

Here are the install files I've installed into my Win 7 64-bit OS:

1. avin2-SensorKinect-2d13967\Platform\Win32\Driver\dpinst-amd64.exe
2. OpenNI-Win64-1.3.2.1-Dev
3. NITE-Win64-1.4.0.5-Dev
4. Sensor-Win64-5.0.3.3-Redist

With regards to #1 above, there is a dpinst-x86.exe in the same
folder, but when I try to run that, I get this: "You have to run the
64-bit version of DPInst.exe in this machine."

Are you saying I should install the 32-bit versions of #2, #3, and #4
above?

Thanks so much, Erlend.

First I would try installing SensorKinect-Win-OpenSource64-5.0.3.4.msi, rather than the dpinst-amd64.exe that you are using. I'm not sure what the difference is...

If that still doesn't work, then yes, try installing all the 32bit versions.

Also, don't install Sensor-Win64-5.0.3.3-Redist. That is I believe for the PrimeSense reference hardware, not the Kinect.

Erlend Cleveland, you are the greatest!!! I've been screwing around
with this all weekend, and in the end, it was your advice that got it
working! Thanks so much. You're awesome!

Ok. I got it working too.. Just for future reference, I did the
following: -

install openni dev latest unstable
install avin2 sensorkinect win32
install driver fro avin2/platform/win32/driver manually
install nite win32 dev latest unstable
copy all the xmls to folders a/c to phase 6 of
http://www.kinecthacks.nl/kinect-tutorial-3-setting-up-openni-and-nite-on-windows-for-kinect/

happy kinecting!

Gladiator, mine was real simple...

1. OpenNI latest unstable
2. NITE latest unstable
3. avin2 SensorKinect

Done. No messing around with the XML files.

Happy hacking!
