Hello, DIYBio!
There has been a lot of buzz this week in the 3D printing community
about the prospect of home-made plastics - perhaps this is an
opportunity for fun and collaboration between groups?
This is what they've been up to:
http://www.shapeways.com/blog/archives/374-Cooking-molding-bioplastics-at-home-recipes,-results-tips.html#extended
The movement itself has a website here:
http://www.openmaterials.org (And they have a twitter feed here, if
you're into that: http://twitter.com/openmaterials)
The ultimate goal of this would be to produce a thin plastic filament
that could be used in a MakerBot type 3D printer.
They've had some promising results so far, but they've been
approaching it completely unscientifically. Perhaps this would be a
great OpForFame for you DIYBio geniuses - plus it looks like a fun
project!
Just a thought,
Rich
