Hi this is going to be the basis of a discussion at the meetup tonight (Tuesday 27th March)

Text from Manchester City Council

Manchester Hackathon

It will be part of a wider digital event in the Autumn, which gives us more time to take on board comments from the digital community, developers in particular about what they might want from the event.

We're hoping to open up more MCC data in the coming months, and also aligning our partners to do the same. By the time this event takes place, we'll be hoping to have opened up some key new fresh data. But what we really need to know is what data do developers want to be able to use as the release of open data can prove to be a lengthy process, our priority data should be the developer community priority data as well.

We want the developer community to be a part of the approach to this, and so we're keen to gather feedback on what the developer community wants to see. Are there are burning desires to code and develop a key solution that's dependant on open data we may have? What are YOUR priorities with regards public sector open data?

In terms of data itself, we're working internally on what we can and can't release, but we're 'hoping' to be able to provide data around some of the following for starters:

  • Environmental information
  • Food hygiene data
  • Planning applications
  • Other planning data such as green belt land, sites of special scientific interest, areas of outstanding natural beauty (not sure if we have any of these), conservation areas, listed buildings and trees with preservation orders.

What else would developers like to see from a digital event in the city that encompasses everything that's going on? What's holding us back as a digital city?

A couple of us were interested in doing something with the food hygene data last year.
Could try and poll interest again. Would probably need to have some commercial side to justify time.

Also spoke to others in the pub about doing a bus fare crowd sourcing site. Would this be the sort of thing welcome at a hackathon? It's an idea that has cropped up a number of times, sounds viable, and would demonstrate which routes are exceptionally costly per mile. I've an offer of help from one front ender, perhaps there's another RoR dev that'd be interested in helping, or maybe an app developer (Android/iPhone). Would be good to get people just approaching the bus companies for the data as well, perhaps starting with some of the smaller operators like Finglands, so perhaps there's other more organisational people who'd like to get involved with that side?

Sadly I couldn't be at NetSquared and ODM during the meetup slot on Tues.

Cheers,
Ian.

Hello,

Is real time bus/tram data on the way. If not maybe you could crowd soruce that as well using a mobile app and find out the actual time it takes to get from stop to stop.

Cheers,

Ian

Hi Ian,

It would be really great to get the GM local authorities to open up their Food Hygiene data, it is good that Manchester are at least looking into it. As far as the crowdsourcing bus data is concerned, TfGM did mention it at the last ODM meeting and I have also sent them an email earlier this evening to chase it up. Would be good, especially if they have some resource to put into it.

You also asked about the Bury project back in February, but due to circumstances I wasn't able to chase up. I have done that now so hopefully we'll start seeing some movement.

Cheers

Julian
