Hello Everyone,

For past few days we had a discussion as to why the Name should be Open "Arm" Lab
Here are the things that we concluded and decided to rename the community to Open Embedded lab

  1. Since it's an Open Source community we cannot align to a particular commercial company.
  2. Also there is a trademarks issue which is beyond our reckoning and we want to avoid all the necessary legal stuff.
  3. Also I had a discussion with folks from other embedded electronics based companies and the professional out there were reluctant to participate since they are not involved in ARM based development and business. We cannot continue with this strategy.
@Suchakra We need to change the logo :D
@Amit We need to change the domain name

This is confusing as OpenEmbedded is a separate project

Agreed.

Agreed. We should broaden the scope of our goals as mentioned here:

'Open Devices Lab' is a prospective candidate too. Didn't like 'Wise' though, and Open Embedded is a separate project. We can use the name 'Embedology' too as I'm sure CoEP wouldn't be using it anymore :) Also, Embedology.in is already registered. No problem with Logo; can be redesigned as and when required.

I would go for these names. Also that "Free" is a one syllable word
and is easy to pronounce.
However the term "Free" is misunderstood by many people.

Free should mean - Free as in Freedom, and not as in free beer.

The closest words in English language are libre and gratis:
"for zero price" (gratis) and "with few or no restrictions" (libre)

Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gratis_versus_Libre for more.

The only concern is that it conicides with OpenEmbedded project
http://www.openembedded.org/index.php/Main_Page
otherwise its a good name.

How about the name "FEELPune" - Free Embedded & Electronics Lab, Pune ?

Open Embedded Lab is kinda long, but if I see more +1s then I'm gonna start with logo modification. I'll miss OpenARMLab. Was really cool! ;)

openEmbedded refers to another project www.openembedded.org. That will cause a lot of confusion and using someone else's name doesn't look very good ( मराठीत म्हंटल तर कोणी दुसऱ्याच  नाव नाही ढापायच ). What about free_embedded or free-micro or something marathi, mukta/free (मुक्त) embedded(i dont know how to translate embedded into marathi).

This was already noted by tuxdna before. and we can see issues will arise. mukta Embedded is fine and works with most languages (as mukta is same in hindi/marathi/bengali/kannada etc) But the issue is that we may soon look beyond locales and would be having global followers maybe. I have another suggestion - "Studio Embedded" or "Open Embedded Studio"

Hmm...
How about Embedded Nirvana ...
So Nirvana is a Sanskrit word and has global identity too thanks to a few American junkies (Kurt Cobain ... Nirvana Band) :D

निर्वाण : is the state of being free (Dictionary meaning)

Everything we do and plan to do revolves around "electron" and doing
so gives us "nirvana".

I suggest the name "electrovana".
( pronounce as electro in electron, and vana in nirvana )

+1 to Embedded Nirvana
Other variations can be : Electronic Nirvana. Electrovana as suggested by tuxdna

OpenLab is simple and elegant too. We need to decide. If anymore suggestions are not there then I'll make a list to think upon.

as far as the global and local following is concerned, we should not worry about us using mukta coz libre is a french word and as far as the internet and FOSS development community is concerned, english is the global language. we must not be afraid of using indian words in our effort to be internationally accepted.

I am sure you wouldn't mind embedded guru's(z) because "GURU is global word"

I might be talking out of turn here, but I would like to bring it to the notice that Steve Jobs choose to call his company as "Apple",(at that time seeming a super worst choice). That did not restrict Apple's growth or even popularity.

I would like to suggest that instead of running after deciding a Name, we work more on the strategy of how we are going to work, how are going to grow and make a point and impact into Open Source,How are we going to educate fellow buddies even in the smallest way. Everything else will follow no matter what we choose name it. All I am saying is just decide something ;-)

Nevertheless I would like to give an opinion to call ourselves as --
                                         E-TUG (Embededed Technology User's Group)

with this we have a nice short form plus the added advantage of user's group like all Linux groups whereby implying Open Source implicity.

Electrovana - 5 syllables.
Embedded Nirvana - 6 syllables.
Open Nirvana - 5 syllables.
OpenLab - 3 syllables

Good point!
