Low end processor/mother board.

Hi,

       I need your help since I am a newbee in hardware line. I am developing a linux based embedded system. Currently I am using Pentium 3 processor and  china make mother board. I would like to reduce the cost of the system by using other low end processors and motherboards. It should be able to load puppy linux. Please can you suggest.

Hi,

AMD's Brazos processors look much better when compared to Atom. And they have also introduced G series x86 cpu's for embedded market. But getting hands on one??? Might be difficult.

        Thanks for the information. The website says the following. Can you please give me few names of the MIPS, ARM processor which is capable to run small linux distro.

"The embedded market space is dominated by SoCs based on RISC processors such as ARM and MIPS"

Can you provide more information about what application you are targeting for.
All ARM9 and above series can run Linux comfortably.
You have another variant of linux named ucLinux for ARM7 series.

Also the cost of the device depends on the peripheral devices a chip has. For example a few ARM7 series procs have onchip ethernet , CAN, I2C, etc and are expensive than a few ARM9 procs. Also the cost depends on the popularity of the device.

       Thanks for the information.

     I am planning to develop a very low end computer. This will be used for accounting purpose in the small offices(which doesn't need heavy applications.). The computer just needs to support any light linux distro and seamonkey web browser.

Hi,

ARM9 based OMAP-l138 processor is good for purpose you have mentioned. Hawkboard, open hardware platform was good for same purpose, but now its going through some hardware issues .


Infact we are also in process of building such kind of SBC, which will stream videos, run word processing application , java applets etc..

processors proposed are AM3703 , AM3715 ,OMAP 3503, AM3505, AM3517.

   Also I am searching for any open hardware design which I can take as reference for my project .

Please give your inputs for above.
