My deadline is fast approaching to get the lenovo laptops out to the freshman. Since the imager is still not available for these, I am trying to get an alternative. Is the open 1to1 image available as an ISO? Can I create an ISO from the ASUS 1005's image? I am thinking that maybe, I can install the image as an ISO with a cd drive and then reimage the lenovo's with FOG. I have successfully installed the unbuntu NR ISO. I am getting very desperate. I have until Wednesday or they will go out with windows 7 on them. I do not want to do that. Thanks for any HELP!!

Does FOG allow you to create an image?  If so...you should be able to make one from the ASUS1005's  OR  you can make an image from Clonezilla and then stick it on the Lenovo....that's what I used when I did it to yours.  Then make an image of the Lenovo for FOG.  You won't get all the "goodness" of the firstrun wizard and may have to touch the machines and name them....unless FOG will provide you with a way to do it.  I will look into creating an ISO for you.

I have been able to use Clonezilla to make a Netbook image and then deploy it to both VirtualBox and another netbook.

The deployment process takes longer than the 1-to-1 imager because the image needs to be on one device and Clonezilla boots from another.  I am not sure if that can be configured differently.  It is possible to have the image on a network share.

True....however, Clonezilla seems to know how to deal with EFI...and thus it may work

So FOG is not an option. When I try to upload the image the process fails. I am still open to the clonezilla method but I could not get it to work.

I do not get any error message. When the netbook connects to fog it pauses at a point and the screen goes crazy. After 30 seconds the netbook reboots and it will not boot back into ubuntu.

Have you tried reinstalling grub after you deployed the image? You might also be able to cheat a little using dd to copy the efi bootloader. This is a pretty cludgy way to do it and you'll have to know where on the disc the bootloader is. You might also have luck installing the bootloader again from a live cd. I've written a small script that will run on the open1to1 imager that bypasses some of the stuff the normal imager does. I'll see if I can break away from imaging during lunch today to upload a copy of it with some documentation.

If you can get an efi bootloader configured you'll still need to convert the image from to a GPT partition, I'm not sure how to do this.

also...try this...Install Ubuntu (bare installation) on the new laptop.  Then....reimage it with the image I gave you.  If that works....then you can then create and new image from that.  I suspect the Ubuntu installation MAY put the necessary bits where they need to go...Clonezilla will recognize that....and then once you reimage they will be there.  Let me know if this works

So here is the script. To use it place them on the pen drive then create a directory called chroot. inside of chroot create dev, proc, sys, and var. To change the name of the image when making it edit the makeimg script. Also edit the deployimg script as I didn't include a way to select a different image. This is a real rough imager but it allowed me to image a computer the normal imager wouldn't let me do.

To run the scripts wait till the normal save/deploy screen apears then press Alt+f2 and login as root//root.

If you only want to install grub just use the deploy script but comment out the fsarchiver line and the lines dealing with the SSH keys.

Is that laptop your testing on the same one I recommended you change the EFI boot bios options on? If so, you probably need to change it back to both, or just EFI.

Yeah, it's a bit rough but it worked for our machines. Also it has to be able to mount sda1 and chroot into it, I'm not sure what kind of error it would show if it fails.

Finally some good news. I installed unbuntu iso from cd. Installed fine and booted up fine. I then dumped the image using clonezilla. I then installed that image using clonezilla and it booted up correctly. So, if there is at least the capability of getting the current image as an iso I can install it and use clonezilla to get an image. I would need to make computer name changes manually but that is better than sending them out with windows. Thanks

One idea that may help you if you don't have a bunch of drives to use....put the image on an SSH server...(use any linux or mac box and simply put the image into a folder that is easy to navigate to).  You can then select that method in Clonezilla....put in the path of the directory where the image lives...and as a result do several at a time.  The only catch is that they will have to be wired to a switch.  Nonetheless....if everything is gigabit back to the server....it should go nice and fast.  Just an idea.

Im lost....you were able to get a machine to be successful....right?  Did you use Clonezilla to make an image of THAT machine (the one that the image was deployed on) and then try to deploy the NEW image?  My hope is that Clonezilla see's the EFI bits and copies them.

Just asking...so I understand....what are you trying to do with the ISO?  As opposed to using a Clonezilla image?

Another idea....Clonezilla allows you to create a recovery-ISO....on the screen where you select  "savedisk" "restoredisk"....etc.  Down at the bottom is a choice for "recovery-iso-zip"   See if that works   I will also try to create one here, but since I don't have an EFI machine....it may not work, but I will try.

I first installed ubuntu NR iso onto the lenovo netbook. I then used clonezilla to create an image of that machine. I then used clonezilla to image a different netbook. I had to do this as the image you gave me would come back with "operating system not found". So, I do not have an image of the open 1to1. The only way I was able to get an image to work was to first install the OS with an iso and then create an image. The image you gave me did not work. I hope this makes sense.

no...what I wanted you to do....was installed Ubuntu NR first...then...try to put the clonezilla image of open1to1 on top of that on the same machine.

One machine....install Ubuntu NR
Then on same machine...install the clonezilla image I sent you

I want to see if that works as I think it will create a seperate EFI partition that "may" stay behind.
