1) did somebody already test the DMXking ultraDMX Micro Interface
which you can buy on ebay? - is it really Enttec-Pro Compatible? I
would be happy, because I hate the USB connectors on the Enttec
Interfaces

2) it will be possible to connect 2 open-usb interfaces with 0.8.18 -
how many usb-pro interfaces are possible?

1) I have done limited testing with the DMXKing Micro Interface and
OLA. It seems to work fine for input and output. You don't get
electrical isolation though.

2) I can't even get one OpenDMX interface to work on my OLA platform.
It is most likely the hardware I'm using. I might think the number of
Pro interfaces possible could be hardware related as well.

I've tested with a couple of the DMXKing devices and they work fine. I
haven't used the Micro though but they are all the same codebase
according to Jason.

What platform? Currently the only way is using the dmxusb kernel
module on Linux. There is a patch to add support for the OpenDMX to
the libusb plugin but that hasn't been integrated (and didn't work for
me).

There is no hard limit on the number of Enttec Pro Compatible Serial
units. At some point you'll start running into CPU exhaustion but I
don't know where this limit is. When I get back from vacation I'll
attach all of my devices and see what happens.

Sorry, this is my mistake. I did get this to work with the kernel
module on a previous install. I thought it had been baked into the
plugin now. I did get output on my tester but it indicated framing
errors.

Thanks for the info - so I ordered one for testing and then there is
no more need to by an open DMX interface, because the DMXKing Micro is
cheaper than the Open

I agree that you are better off with the DMXKing interface for various
reasons. However, I have been recently playing around with a USB-RS485-
WE-1800-BT.

http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/Cables/USBRS485.htm

This works as an OpenDMX interface sans XLR connector. I got one for
$30. If you don't mind ordering 50 of them you should be able to get
them cheap from a Chinese manufacturer.

It was specifically designed to provide a decent alternative to other
low cost interfaces. Without having a micro all the DMX512 timing is
fully dependent on your host OS and that's something we'll never
consider appropriate for DMX512. Ironically I have an experimental
FT232AM based DMX512 interface built well before enttec released the
"open" but decided not to proceed with product development since it
had too many potential issues.

@Simon
I can run a test here if you like, just let me know how many
interfaces. Never struck any issues on the USB/COM side.

Try 10 USB devices both all on one universe and separate universes. I
wrote a small python script a while back that uses RRDTool to graph
internal stats for ola. It's in tools/ola_mon and there is some basic
info at http://opendmx.net/index.php/Ola_mon

just to the discussion about the Open DMX interface - we did a lot of
shows the last years without any single problem using it with simons
knoppix version and only geode PCs - like Alix boards or Fujitsu Futro
A240. I never would do shows using the Open interface on a windows PC.

I did now tests with the SliTaz-Ola Live CD and 2 Handke Dimmers and I
had the first time troubles - it started to flicker with Linestras at
100% - only Linestra, all other Lights like Spectras .....was ok -
when I put them at 95% evrything was ok -

I changed the interface to a Pro and no more flickering - so the first
viewable difference

After the premiere, I will do more tests...

I know, the post is old, but is it really possible to run theese cheap chineese Dongles with OLA?

Best regards

Hi Sebastian,

Something like the ultraDMX Micro as discussed in this thread will be better, as the timing is done in the device not in the PC:

Anything listed on the website will have been tested and used by someone:

If you're referring to the FTDI/OpenDMX type devices, see the relevant sections here:

Although you should also read this:

Given you're running on a Pi, if you want really cheap you can use it's on-board UART to do the same thing (you'll just need the TTL to RS485 chip), there's more detail here:
