DiManno: Royal protesters missed their mark
By Rosie DiManno

MONTREAL-They tried to oeuf the Prince of Wales.

And hit instead a bunch of Canadian soldiers - some of them
unilingually French - along with the poor military band that had
stepped outside for a bit of music to soothe the savage breast.

Some old Anglo ladies standing in front of the Black Watch armoury on
narrow Rue Bleury, they got yolk-slimed too.

And suddenly the shield-and-baton wielding riot police were crunching
down the street, attempting to push back the bellowing, fuming crowd.
That action turned the anti-monarchist demonstration into a sit-down
protest.

The hostile gathering was no more than 150-strong, yet noisier and
certainly more security-threatening than their numbers would suggest.

Holding aloft placards that read "Majesty Go Home!" - though Prince
Charles is still an HRH, only the Queen addressed as Her Majesty --
and "On a pas vote pour ca", the shrill get-lost throng tried hard to
duplicate the anti-royalty mob-rants of the 60s, at one point
chanting: "God f--k the Queen!"

But it was only a few of the ringleaders - ultra hardcore within this
hardcore, devoutly separatist assembly, those wearing balaclavas and
kerchiefs tied around their faces, who got seriously into the faces of
police.

Two protesters were removed and apparently arrested - even before the
royals got there.

The protest was organized by Reseau de resistance du Quebecois, a
radical but marginal independence outfit that last week sent a letter
to the palace warning Prince Charles - and presumably his wife, the
Duchess of Cornwall - not to step foot in the province: Not welcome.

"He may not have got the letter but tonight he gets the message," said
Julien Gaudreau, a 21-year-old Laval university student who claims to
head the "political bureau" of the association.

"The prince is an important symbol of power given by blood," Gaudreau
sneered. "We don't want this symbol in Quebec."

But Gaudreau insisted the demo was not aimed at troops, though they're
the ones who took most of the hits.

"The signs says Majesty Go Home, not Military Go Home. The association
has a view about the military too, but this isn't the time to make
it."

As visible as the Quebec fleur de lys flag in this mini-mob was the
French Patriots flag, dating back to the English resistance of the
early 19th century, the blue band since replaced with green "in
solidarity" with Irish republicans.

Even after the crowd had mostly settled down, a second unit of riot
police arrived, drumming their batons against their shields, herding
the demonstrators into side streets -- well beyond egg-hurtling
distance. The area was sufficiently cleared to allow for the royal
motorcade to pull up in front of the building. Except it didn't --
quietly, without fanfare, arriving at a back entrance.

The royals, running an hour late, were actually inside the building as
the unaware crowd continued its sloganeering: "We will never be
defeated" and "Quebec A Country", the limo fleet finally arrived.

Charles was in Montreal primarily to present new colors to the Black
Watch, a regiment he inherited as colonel-in-chief following the death
of the Queen Mother.

The royal couple met with Premier Jean Charest earlier in the day and
visited the HQ of Cirque du Soleil for a private acrobatic show.

Less than 150 assholes in Montreal, and one on the internet cheering them
on.

They had their own problems. Prior to 1960, the Catholic church in
Quebec had them living like animals did in the 19th century.
