These are the kinds of unguarded moments that can stick to a politician.
Ralph Klein is still remembered for blaming eastern "creeps and bums" for crime while he
was mayor of Calgary in the early 1980s. David Tsubouchi, an Ontario cabinet minister
under premier Mike Harris, was derided as "tin-can Tsubouchi" for the 1995 suggestion that
poor people haggle over dented cans of tuna.
And Stephen Harper is still reviled by some Easterners for saying in 2002 that his party's
biggest stumbling block here was the "can't-do attitude" of people who "sit around waiting
for favours from government."
The prospect of such a lasting reputation may be why Gerald Keddy, Conservative MP for the
rural Nova Scotia riding South Shore-St. Margaret's, was quick to apologize yesterday
after reportedly calling Halifax street people "no-good bastards" too lazy to work. His
comment, which appeared amid news of surging Employment Insurance claims and rising food
bank use in Halifax, was already sparking criticism.
"Raising oneself out of poverty is not just a matter of sheer will and good old-fashioned
determination," said Merlin Watt, local representative of the group Make Poverty History.
"It's incredibly disappointing for the broad brush to be used."
Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter, a New Democrat who led the charge against Mr. Harper
seven years ago, introducing a resolution condemning his comments that passed unanimously
in the provincial legislature, declined comment yesterday about Mr. Keddy's remarks. But
NDP Halifax MP Megan Leslie, whose north end constituency office is not far from the local
methadone clinic, admitted her first fleeting reaction was anger.
"But then I felt a little bit sad and depressed about what this government is doing," she
said. "It's not about [Mr. Keddy] ... it's about this government and how they feel about
people who are on hard times, who are struggling."
Long a fixture in front of one of Halifax's busiest liquor stores, a panhandler who gave
his name only as Christopher called the comments insulting.
"It's stupid," he said, tapping his eye patch and then his ear to indicate his
disabilities. "I haven't worked for 20 years. How could I?"
Mr. Keddy, who last made headlines for brandishing a large novelty cheque with the party
logo while announcing federal funding in his riding, reportedly made the comment while
arguing that Annapolis Valley agriculture couldn't survive without imported labour.
"Nova Scotians won't do it - all those no-good bastards sitting on the sidewalk in Halifax
that can't get work," he was quoted saying in the Halifax Chronicle-Herald.
The comment appeared the same day Statistics Canada released the latest Employment
Insurance figures. The number of Haligonians receiving EI jumped nearly 44 per cent from
September of 2008 to the same month this year.
In a statement released yesterday, Mr. Keddy apologized for his "insensitive" remarks.
"In no way did I mean to offend those who have lost their job due to the global recession,
nor did I mean to suggest that anyone who is unemployed is not actively looking for
employment," he said.

requires attacks for at least 2 to 5 sessions. You rightwing types would like that these

The Conservatives have shown, time and again, that they have a very real disdain for the
working guy and a really warm affection for those who ask them for bailouts and tax cuts.
This MP from Nova Scotia is just another chink in the already rusty armor of the Harper

Prince George, and then there was
the NDPer Svend Robinson who admitted he was a thief.
The Liberals have done sweet bugger all for British Columbia -- you care to
get into how the Conservatives and Liberals have funded many projects
in Ontario and Quebec, and have not given much in the way for supporting the
forest industry out here??
Let's get serious here. The fisheries in Atlantic Canada are important and
there was a need for federal funding to keep it going, but let's balance
that
out with funding for our resource industries out here too. One region
cannot be played up over another. There needs to be a balance.

The voters would appear to disagree with you on this (as they do on
most things) since the poll numbers don't indicate any change in
political support. What I found really funny, though, was the CTV
coverage of the story where they had a employer on who owned a
Christmas tree farm and was forced to import Mexican workers to
harvest them because the locals were "unwilling" to work the hours
required. The lengths he went to to avoid having to use the word
'lazy' were truly amusing...
(and while we're at it...having KKKaren calling anyone else a
'bigot' is also quite amusing...;)

Look, either way, Harper's main agenda right now is at Copenhagen meeting,
where all world political leaders are trying to push forth a gobal
government based on fraud and stupid people like Pat Bay don't have a clue
about the type of nonsense this country is going to go though, by losing
it's identy as a country.
I don't trust Harper or the Liberals any more, both partys are working
towards the same goals, but using different ways to come forth with the same
