256mb isn't bad. It's a one window at a time deal and that depends on
what windows and services running at startup. The iMac G3 350 I have
here has 128mb, 10.3.9 and runs OK. I use it to run OS 9 apps from time
to time but 10.3.9 does run OK. 256mb and it would be better. Here's
some quick stats I ran this morning on an iBook 366 CS with 384mb/40gb.
OS 10.3.9 on startup used 92mb ram. This is NOT a new install though, it
has a few things loading on startup.
OS 10.4.10 startup with dashboard turned off 102mb Fresh install.
OS 9.2.2 31mb. 2yr install, Adobe Font manager loads on startup along
with a firewall and Airport services.
Turn dashboard off. You can do it by terminal or Onyx. Also for units
with small drives MultiLingual can remove unneeded languages.
10.3 needs 3.6gb, 1.9gb if you do not install any other languages and
printer drivers.
10.4 needs 7gb but can be squeezed down to about 5.
