I haven't seen any posts here since November 17th. How is the One Used
Mac project going for you early adopters?
Since my posts I am refurbishing a Quadra 700, a IIci, two SEs five
Newton eMate 300s and am starting on two B&W G3 towers. Also, I've
refurbed a Powerbook 1400 two 5300c laptops, Powerbooks 145, 160, 180
and 185c .

I'm out on a limb, here, (DROP THAT SAW!), but it seems that if you were to place the originally supplied OS on the iMacs you'd be correct as long as the original software disk(s) go with it.

You are correct, however, I do not have the original discs, and even
if I did, Mac OS 8.1 is hardly a viable modern OS. As we discussed in
a previous thread, 10.3 (maybe 10.2) is the oldest I'd want to send
this thing out the door with.

YOU'RE right. OS 10.3.9 would be the furthest back I'd wanna go, too. Otherwise you'd say goodbye to modern peripherals and a decent websurfing experience.
Right, and that leaves us right where we got stuck a few weeks ago,
how to obtain legal, free or extremely cheap copies of Mac OS 10.3
Unfortunately somebody in the other thread said they already tried to
get Apple to help in this matter but were turned down. So for now, I
guess I stick to PCs for my charity work.

There is a way around it, but it still might have legal issues.
Acquire a Mac that came with 10.3. Then it's LEGAL for you to install 10.3 on it. Swap out the HD and install it in another unit. Legal or not, I don't know.

Anyone with legal expertise wanna draw up a contract or TOS of some kind stating that OS X 10.3 is PROVIDED BY Apple, Inc. ONLY for the purpose of education. Usage of the OS must remain at a school for children under age 18 and can not be transfered unless permitted in writing from Apple, Inc. Also that it is provided as-is where-is at no charge. If we have the schools sign it, then email it back to Apple, that might help matters. Or maybe create a Filemaker database on-line we can keep updated with each installation.
Also during the OS Setup and registration we SHOULD pre-fill the school information even if they will not have internet access they will in order to update them from us.
If they allow it I'll cut a custom CD set with 10.3.9 update included but the other updates will need to be performed prior to distribution. I don't see why they wouldn't Steve Jobs was willing to give 10.4 to the OLPC organization at no charge.
Isn't his email there Ste...@apple.com? Stev...@apple.com? Anyone willing to send him a letter? Maybe Schiller would be more willing since he could use it in marketing. Keep in mind we ONLY WANT 10.3 and MAYBE iLife 04'. Appleworks 6.2.9 would be awesome too.
I have a feeling Apple won't be into it unless we have an actual Non- Profit status so is anyone willing to formally form a CLUB in the name of One-Mac-Per-Child USA.

Hi....I'm a friend of Jeff Garrison. I'll gladly contribute a 3 CD set of
Panther. These are 'Black and Silver" retail discs.....totally legit! Since
the 10.3.9 update is free from Apple's website, I'll leave that to you guys.
Just cover the postage and they're yours. Mikie

Alright. Apple? Or any one tied to Apple who might be reading this thread....
You need to get a program out to refurbishers like the Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher certification.
You can't let MS have the lead here. YOU CAN'T.
There are an army of people who want to rebuild older Macs for donation to the needy and you need to show your committment to the effort.
Roll up your sleeves and dig in. Give us access to your older OS X (10.3). We're out here waiting.......
I have several very usable old Macs but can't seem to find a home for them.
I don't have the funds to ship them anywhere and don't know how to get them
to anyone who could still use them. My handicapped son was using the
Performa until a year ago when a newer one came along. I have a Performa 575
that works very well with the older educational software. It even ran the
Pajama Sam type stuff well. I also have an LCIII and Several 5260 and a
5400, 5500 and 9600 which I have refurbished. I have 2 iMac 350's a 600 Snow
iMac, a strawberry 266, and a bondi blue with a 333Mhz processor and
possibly can get a flower power working again. i also have a B&W 300MHz. All
of these would be great machines for someone. The older ones would have 7.1
or so on them but I have no OS disks for the newer ones. I also don't have
anyone to give them to. I have ADB Keyboards and mice for most of the
machines but no USB Keyboards and Mice. I also have several USB printers and
monitors for the ones that need it.
