setting the environment variables in omnetpp

i first installed ns2 and then i install omnetpp .For adding the environment variables i am unable to edit the bashrc file.Then i got the following error message
gedit ~/.bashrc
(gedit:19285): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
** (gedit:19285): WARNING **: Could not connect to session bus
plz help how to set the environment variables in bashrc file
