[Omnetpp-l] Mixim - Another transmission range question

Hi all,

I'm simulating a node that broadcasts to several receivers that are scattered around it.
All nodes are static.
I'm using the SimplePathLoss model with txPower = 110mW, thermalNoise = -110dBm, sensitivity set at -120dBm and an snr threshold at 0.12589254117942.

At this setting, the interference range is 322.97.

I'm just wondering, if there is a direct and simpler way to determine at what distance the signal would be correctly received without going into all of the calculations?

Any pointer would be greatly appreciated :)

I fear you totally misunderstand the interference range

In your example 322 m is not the range at which messages can be received
CORRECTLY, but rather the distance at which SOME energy is recceived. To put
it the other way around, according to the selected model any node further away
than 322 m will definitly not receive any power from a transmission.

Whether or not some node can CORRECTLY receive a message depends on the
parameters of the phy (sensitivity, coding, modulation, etc) and is thus also
calculated in the phy. These calculations are btw normally even more complex.

However, MiXiM also supports more simple models. E.g. the UnitDisk connection
manager (module/connectionManager/UnitDisk) calculates the interference
distance based on a simple ini parameter (radioRange).

But make sure you know what you're doing. Using such a model only makes sense
with an appropriate PHY implementation! And currently there is no PHY
implementation within MiXiM for which the unit disk would make sense. You have
been warned :-)

Maybe we should add a calculation tool -- the numbers you calculated do not
look correct ;)

Thanks for the very prompt responses.

Actually, what I wanted to do is to place nodes in various ranges.

I figured the distance for the interference range is figured out.
So the next thing is to figure out is the transmission range whereby the message can be correctly received so that I can place some nodes there and be certain that the nodes there would receive the messages correctly.

I am clear about the interference range, wasnt too sure why I included the information about it in the first place though.
Maybe subconsciously, I wanted to get some feedback on its correctness :D
Good thing I did for Andreas pointed out that it might be incorrect :D
