Hi All,

I was just looking into the possibility of creating a backup plugin
for Omeka and was wondering if anyone else was currently trying to do
the same.

Thanks,

Sounds very cool -- are you thinking along the lines of a database
backup plugin (like this one: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-db-backup/)
or one that does files as well (like this: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/backupwordpress/)?
There are a few of these for WordPress that make the process easy --
having not dug into their code, I wonder if any of it would be useful.

I'm thinking along the lines of backing up the files and database,
possibly e-mailing them to the admin when done and/or uploading to an
off-site FTP location for safe keeping.

I've seen the WordPress plugins and they work pretty well.

Hi,

I think we've got somebody working on a backup plugin, but AFAIK
development hasn't started yet. Perhaps the two of you could
collaborate on the design, though the 2 plugins could potentially be
different enough to warrant two separate development paths.

In terms of backing up the database, how were you thinking of storing
the data? We thought of doing an SQL backup, but we were also hoping
to use a plugin like this with a future hosted Omeka service, possibly
for restoring from backups as well, so SQL was out of the question.
We thought of using the Omeka-XML format instead, though there's
plenty of room for discussion on that.

I'll leave it to John to discuss the details a bit more when he gets a
chance.

Thanks,

Kris

Hi,

I am indeed working on a backup/export plugin for Omeka, but Kris is correct, I'm still in the design/planning stage.

My current design would export the items, etc. as an XML file, as Kris mentioned.  The original "archive" files would also be included, and it would all be zipped up and stored somewhere on the server where the admin could download a copy.

Do you have some thoughts on any of those aspects - the export format or what is exported?

John,

In your efforts to write an Omeka export plugin, don't hesitate to
contact me if you have any suggestions about Omeka's XML schema. It's
a work in progress and I have no problem making changes to it if
necessary--up to and including a complete rewrite.
