Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine, University of Basel, Switzerland. kerst...@unibas.ch OBJECTIVES: To analyse the results of recent studies not yet included in a 2003 report of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) on occupational exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields as potential risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in the online databases of PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, DIMDI and COCHRANE, as well as in specialised databases and journals. Eight studies published between January 2000 and July 2005 were included in the review. RESULTS: The findings of these studies contribute to the evidence of an association between occupational magnetic field exposure and the risk of dementia. Regarding amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the recent results confirm earlier observations of an association with electric and electronic work and welding. Its relationship with magnetic field exposure remains unsolved. There are only few findings pointing towards an association between magnetic field exposure and Parkinson's disease. CONCLUSIONS: The epidemiological evidence for an association between occupational exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields and the risk of dementia has increased during the last five years. The impact of potential confounders should be evaluated in further studies. Posted February 06, 2009 04:48 PM   Medications and Treatments ....   To All: Below is link to an extremely important Alzheimers' study re occupational magnetic field exposures, completed in 2007, with results reported by the California Alzheimers' Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Centers (14 page study -- 21 references) citing the following CONCLUSION: "Elevated occupational MF exposure was associated with an increased risk of AD. Based on previous published studies, the results likely pertain to the general population." http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=17559686 * * While electric field bedroom exposures were not included as part of study protocol/parameters, the authors, nevertheless, do mention confounders such as having an office next to communications' equipment room, sleeping on the other side of wall with a circuit breaker box and other frequent exposure possibilities. Since my two grandsons who were diagnosed with rare immune deficiencies (pre-Leukemic) "improved" after moving their beds away from walls opposite electric meters and "improvement" has also occurred in my husband after moving his electric clock radio off his nightstand, the ramifications of not including close, chronic, prolonged nightly electric field exposures as part of any study, become painfully obvious!
