This is just a quick
note to give you a few things to think about and do to help end the
death penalty in the United States.
First, last week Rachel King passed away after a long struggle with
cancer. Rachel was a dear friend and former chairperson of NCADP's
board of directors. Much has been written about her many contributions
to the struggle to end the death penalty, including a small piece on
the front page of NCADP's web page and also a wonderful tribute by former
NCADP board chairman Bill Pelke, which can be read here.
True to form, Rachel's
family asked that instead of flowers, those wishing to honor Rachel's
memory make contributions to the NCADP. We wish to thank Rachel and
her family for allowing the National Coalition to be the vehicle for
continuing Rachel's abolitionist legacy. Please consider a contribution today in
memory of Rachel King.
More than 20 executions are scheduled between now and
the end of the year. These are listed under ALERTS! at http://www.NCADP.org
NCADP encourages appeals for clemency via regular postal mail and again
as the date approaches via the telephone. Your personalized, hand
written appeal through the mail has infinitely greater impact than a
mass-produced e-mail. Please take action today!
Please note that
one of the executions scheduled is that of Troy Anthony Davis by the
state of Georgia on September 23rd. NCADP is one of many organizations
taking special interest in this case due to the compelling evidence of
wrongful conviction. You will hear more from us on this case in the
coming days and weeks.
