Up to May 2009 on the Pandemic
Preparedness page on the WHO's website:
"An
influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus appears against
which the human population has no immunity, resulting in several,
simultaneous epidemics worldwide with enormous numbers of
deaths and illness.
changed:
"An
influenza pandemic may occur when a new influenza virus appears against
which the human population has no immunity... Pandemics can be either
mild or severe in the illness and death they cause, and the severity of
a pandemic can change over the course of that pandemic. enormous - disappeared
WHO's press release trying to explain the above
contradiction, after a CNN journalist noticed it had been changed:
"WHO
did not change the definition of pandemic in the course of this
outbreak... Some of the confusion may stem from the fact that there was a document on WHO's website for
some months that said a pandemic would include 'enormous amounts of
cases and deaths'. This was removed when it was brought
to our attention. This
information was never part of the formal definition of a pandemic
and was never part of documents sent to Member States for their
preparedness work."
But this doc was the main page
of the subject Pandemic Preparedness on the WHO website - and not
in some neglected doc
