Parliamentary
Conference "Environment
and Health: Indoor Pollution
and Multi-System Illnesses" -
Summary for the
Council of Europe Internet website
"An increasing number of scientific
studies are showing the links that exist between certain pollutants and
given
types of illnesses, such as allergies, respiratory disorders,
reproductive
problems or diseases of the central nervous system."
It
was in these terms that Jean Huss (Luxembourg, SOC), Rapporteur of the
Parliamentary Assembly's Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and
Local
and Regional Affairs, introduced the theme of the conference
"Environment
and Health: Indoor
Pollution and Multi-System
Illnesses" held at the Council of Europe's headquarters in
Strasbourg on 5 December 2008.
The experts attending the conference concluded that an urgent response
was
needed to the omnipresent "cocktail" of chemical, physical and
biological agents surrounding us (electromagnetic fields, substances
used in
the construction industry or toxic moulds), which engendered new
syndromes. Pollution
inside homes and buildings (whether old or new) was
just as harmful to health
as outdoor pollution. The participants
regretted the fact
that environmental diseases were marginalised within health care
systems and
often treated as psychiatric disorders. They called for environmental
medicine
to be recognised as a full-blown medical discipline.
