SENT September 8, 2008  ACTION NEEDED BY September 11, 2008

The state of Georgia has issued a death warrant for Troy Davis to commence on Sept 23, which will likely be the date of the scheduled execution - this despite evidence that Davis may be innocent.

Davis was sentenced to death for the murder of Police Officer Mark MacPhail in Savannah, Georgia.  According to Amnesty International, the case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony that contained inconsistencies, even at trial.  Since then, all but two of the state's nine non-police witnesses from the trial have recanted or contradicted their testimony. Many of these witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that they were pressured or coerced into testifying or signing statements.

The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty asks you to take action TODAY to help convince the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to act so that the State of Georgia does not carry out this execution.  The Board has scheduled the clemency hearing for September 12 (THIS FRIDAY) so time is of the essence.

Your short and polite note asking the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to grant clemency to Troy Anthony Davis may be e-mailed, faxed and/or mailed via postal mail today or sent for overnight delivery by Thursday.

In addition to sending your personal hand written note in the mail or by fax, and to making the phone call, please go to this web site to take this urgent action today:

As always as you take this action, please keep the family of the victim, Officer MacPhail, in your thoughts and prayers.

ALSO, we have learned that Jack Alderman, who has been a model prisoner on Georgia's death row for over 30 years, has been scheduled for execution on September 16.  Alderman has been denied clemency without the benefit of a clemency hearing before the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles.

Some language to consider:

I am writing with great concern and urgency to ask you to schedule a clemency hearing for Jack Alderman who the State of Georgia plans to execute on September 16, 2008.

It is the Board of Pardons and Paroles Policy not to meet with any person or serving a sentence in the State of Georgia or their attorney to consider parole issues with the exception of those who are facing the death penalty. There is good reason for this exception; there is no more severe punishment than the death penalty. It is imperative that a condemned person receives full benefit of the criminal justices system's checks and balances before the ultimate action of taking his life. Now is not the time to stray from your own policy and deny Mr. Alderman clemency before a hearing under his current death warrant.

FINALLY, IF YOU LIVE ANYWHERE NEAR ATLANTA, GEORGIA, PLEASE ATTEND THE RALLY FOR TROY ANTHONY DAVIS AT THE WASHINGTON STREET STEPS OF THE GEORGIA STATE CAPITOL THIS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, FROM 6 TO 8PM.

Thank You.

Yours in the Struggle,

--abe
