Over the past few
weeks, you
have no doubt heard about the massive second-quarter profits
reported by oil and gas companies. It's painful enough to read
about how they're rolling in money while American consumers
suffer at the pump. But for folks like you and me, who care
deeply about America's special public lands, it's even more
troubling to see Big Oil use those profits on an unprecedented
lobbying campaign to pressure Congress to open the Arctic Refuge
and other protected areas to even more oil and gas drilling.
Before leaving
Washington last
week for the August Congressional recess, the industry's allies
in Congress introduced several alarming proposals to open
protected areas to drilling. They also stymied well-meaning
efforts in the House and Senate to put the country on sound
energy footing.
This
situation has
become very dangerous for our protected lands. Your
help is urgently needed.
Please call
your
elected officials while they're home in their regional offices
and tell them not to participate in the land grab.
It's simple: We've
provided
talking points below. In most cases you'll be asked to leave a
message with an intern or on voice mail.
Because the
industry is pumping
tens of millions of dollars into lobbying and propaganda, it is
more important than ever for your senators and representative to
hear that you want meaningful, long-term energy solutions, not
false, profit-driven promises.
Thanks for
all that you
do to speak out for wilderness!

Please tell your elected officials
immediately that you want them to fight for clean energy
solutions and that you strongly oppose efforts to open our
protected areas to drilling.
Talking Points
-
I'm calling because I oppose
giving big oil
companies more public lands and coastal waters for drilling,
while they already have rights to drill on tens of millions of
acres that they aren't even using. Giving them more of our
public lands and coasts won't lower gasoline prices – it
just gives big oil companies another bonanza they don't
deserve.
-
When Americans are feeling real
pain at the gas
pumps, this is no time for false promises. We can't influence
the price of oil through more drilling when we possess less than
3 percent of the world's reserves but consume nearly 24 percent
of the world's oil.
-
Please help put our nation on
secure footing for
the future by encouraging real solutions to our energy
challenges, such as investing in new energy technologies,
raising fuel economy standards, and investing in energy
efficiency. These long-term solutions will put the United States
on the right track, while also protecting our remaining public
lands for future generations.
If you can do one more thing,
please tell us about your phone calls. By doing so, we'll better
know which members of Congress are receiving our message. Click
