I'd bring my telescope with solar filter to the Makery, but it would be difficult getting it on the roof. I'll be hanging out at Gallagher Park (54th& NW Radial) with it, if anyone wants to stop by. Here's a photo I took with a small point & shoot a few years ago of a Mercury transit. Venus will appear much larger. The small dot the left is Mercury, what appears on the right is a sun spot.

Rick,

I'll try to show up around 6:30 at the park.  Guess that means I'll be late to the meeting...

What meeting?

No meeting tonight.  Eric had sent a correction out a week or so ago, because the schedule proposed back in May would have screwed up our permanent meeting schedule next fall, when we go back to bi-weekly meetings.

Rather than switching to the first Tuesday (as proposed), we'll only be doing "every other, other Tuesday" as formal meetings.  Meeting dates for June, July and August are:
6/12, 7/10, and 8/7 , as always, 7pm at the Makery.

Other than that, we'll still be doing alternating Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Sorry for the mixup!

It's started and I'm getting a pretty good decent view.  Feel free to stop by.

I took over 200 shots of the transit, and I still have to go through them to find the best shots, but I think that this is the coolest. A jet flew across the image of the Sun while I was taking this shot of the transit.

Rick,

I and a co-worker are interested in the setup you ended up using.
Mind replying with a brief description?

Great photo by the way!

Thanks,
Dan

I used my Orion SkyQuest XT8, which is a Dobsonion style telescope. They're relatively inexpensive. Mine was about $350.00. I think they're the best telescopes you can get for the money. I was holding my little Canon PowerShot point & shoot to the eye piece. It's a pretty low tech approach, but it works for Sun or Moon shots.

I forget to mention that I hold a solar filter on the front of my scope (very important!). I use this scope primarily for night time viewing, but having a solar filter makes it versatile. They can be made from Mylar, but mine was purchased from Orion.
