Just got word that one of these is available to be saved from the scrap yard.  I haven't see it myself, but I'm going to try and get my hands on it before the end of the week.  Perhaps we can tie it to the MMM to print out Twitter feeds???

I would love to help with that project, holler as soon as you need anything.

Maybe hook it up so that messages typed into the console are tweeted to the secondary twitter feed?

That'd be pretty neat... I wonder if speaks serial or something...

If it's telex it's an early form of what RS232 uses, I think that with some electrical conversion you can get them to talk to a serial port.

It would be pretty cool to have a text input on the webcam page so that people could send text messages to the machine.

That'd be easy enough... Spam might be a problem... TTYSPAM?

It may show up at the space as early as Sunday!

Yeah, the page server would have to rate limit and block duplicates.

What do you think about using reCAPTCHA? (Aside from being annoying as heck)

We could set it up so that if you dial one address and then type a message it would go to the twitter feed, and another address would send it to the web cam page. That way if someone sent a message from the page you could go over and send a reply back. Or if the space needs something, you could tweet it from the machine.

Good idea, but I'd want it to allow registered users (people who have registered their mobile device with the MMM) to authenticate and not have to keep entering the captcha.

How would that work, though? I thought the MMM keeps track of the MAC
address, which isn't visible when the mobile device isn't associated
with the local Wireless...

It wouldn't be part of the presence detection, it would just use the user database as a way to identify people. The idea is that if someone has gone to the trouble of coming in and registering their phone with the MMM, they probably aren't going to be spamming the machine, and if they do, we can put a 'moderated' flag on that account that will block it sending telex messages.

This would require modifying that user database to have an actual user name and passcode of some sort, so people wouldn't have to enter their mobile's MAC address.

I can see how that might be inconvenient...

Perhaps when you registered your device, it could generate a "bit.ly
style" token for you to use as a PIN of sorts...

David Knaack

I'm not familiar with that sort of token. How would that work?

Kevin Fusselman

Basically, when you register your mobile on the Wireless, the next
screen comes back with a random alpha-numeric string (6 digits or so)
that is your combination-userid/password for the external website.

Essentially a random password that you can't change. (It could be a
hash (or part of a hash) of some sort on your MAC)

The benefits are that it's quick, simple and low maintenance.
Password recovery is accomplished by returning to the Makery and
accessing the MMM registration page from your mobile again.

Auto-generated pin. That's easy. Would it be easier to remember if it generated a 'correct horse battery staple' style ID?

You're asking the wrong person (if you want them to disagree; I love
CHBS passwords!)

Or maybe play a game of trek.  That cost me a lot of time share account money at UNO in the 70's.

i hooked up a teletype to our gray market Apple II+ like machine to
play ping-pong on the basement big screen color tv instead of the 10"
black n white in the 70's.

I don't think this is quite the same... This is what's sitting at the Makery:

...and thus began Apple Corporations long slide into bankruptcy and obscurity, all thanks to their short sighted-ness of making an 'open' platform.

I feel sorry for the kids today who can't open up their toys to see what makes them tick...
