Hi folks!

Happy New Year. I hope one of your resolutions is to make something this year! Or maybe you resolve to change from an OMG lurker to an OMG member.

Here's a chance to put that resolution to action - our next meeting is this week, Tuesday, starting at 7:00pm.  Doors will open by 6:00p and will be open until at least 10:00p.  Our presentation this week will be another "intro/refresher" course, this time on our Cricut cutting machine.  If you aren't familiar with this, it is a staple in the scrapbooking world to cut pre-designed shapes into specialty papers for decorating scrapbook pages.  Here at OMG, however, we have taken it one step further.  No need for pre-designed shapes, as we have a front end that allows you to custom-design anything you want.  And no need to limit yourself to just paper, as we can cut posterboard, cardstock, construction paper, vinyl, and more.  If you are thinking about a custom graphic, custom stencil, or anything along those lines, this is the machine you will want to use.

Bring yourself, your project ideas, and anything else you want, and be there on Tuesday,  And don't forget, since this is the first meeting of the month, please bring your dues, too!

See ya' on Tuesday!

That machine sounds really cool. Do you have to be a member and pay dues to attend the meeting?

Absolutely not!  Our meetings (and just about any other "open" shop time) are open and free, and we encourage you to come on down and check things out!  If you like what you see, and want to be a part of it, then at some point we'll ask you to become a member.

Membership is a way to support Omaha Maker Group, helping us to pay our bills and ensuring we can stick around and keep providing a fun environment for people to build and learn.  We're generally pretty easygoing about it, but if you want to spend a lot of time at the Makery and use the tools and materials, we will generally ask that you pay dues to help offset costs.  On the other hand, if you just want to stop by occasionally and see what we're all about, or attend presentations, there's absolutely no obligation to pay a membership.  However, don't forget that the group only exists in its current form because we're able to rent and maintain our workshop - if you like what you see, we would ask that you consider becoming a member.

Membership is in the form of monthly dues, which can be paid by hand or through a PayPal subscription.  Dues are $15 per month for a basic membership, with a few other options if you decide you'd like to spend a bit more to support the group or have a key to access the space during off hours.

Minor correction:  Dues are $35 per month unless you're currently unemployed or under-employed...in which case its $15.  Well worth it, as you'll see. :)

Did that change?  Is that changing?

The web site still shows $15 for basic.

It also looks like something is broken.

Nothing has changed or is changing. But the $15 level has always been intended as a basic, no-frills membership intended for folks like students and those in between jobs. $35 is our standard membership. And $50 is our patron membership.

:-/

It seems like something changed.

I thought $15 was "full member" and $35 was keyholder?

I'm employed, not a student, but don't want/need keyholder access - am I being a slacker here @ $15?

The idea of calling the $15 tier "full member" is to indicate that even the lowest paying tier is still really a true and full member, without the keyholder privileges. When we were initially chartered, we had quite a few more UNO students, and there was a strong concern that the discount/student tier would become a "second-class-citizen" of sorts.  Thus the naming, and the intent.

Isn't there a Lincoln Makerspace?  I know we had some people go down there to visit a group housed in an old window factory...

Yep, its called Lincoln Makerspace.  They lurk on here, and they have a FB page...which isn't updated much.  I hope they're still around.

yes...  still on hiatus.

Space is still there, but last time I went it looked like no one had been there in months.

Will update people if/when things get going again.

Definitely update us! I'd love to meet a real maker, lol.  It's a shame because I work at UNL, and and haven't really seen any maker-minded ppl.

One would think that UNL would be a treasure trove of maker types. Send out flyers, give the students candy. They will come!

Seriously though, some of the projects related to UAVs coming out of there are impressive. There have to be a few makers in attendance.

I've seen a group of 4 or five ppl together, flying two  different rc quad-copters, but was working and couldn't holler at them.

Don't know about handing out candy, but my wife and I are pretty good home chefs. Any OMG'S are welcome to hit us up for dinner if you are in the star city.

Yes, we currently are hiring a Manager of Learning Experiences, that would work with our Manager of Guest Experience to oversee our Education department.  This position would work directly with children part of the time helping to improve and develop programing for the Omaha Children’s Museum.

http://careerlink.com/employer/jobs/0649

That link has all of the jobs we currently have posted.  In addition to those positions, we are also looking for an Outreach Program Lead and presenter, that would travel to schools and early childhood centers to do programing for the museum.  That particular position would work directly with children the majority of the time.
