So far, I've tentatively narrowed it to NewsBlur or Feedly.  Unfortunately, both sites are almost totally crippled at the moment, so I'm struggling to give either one a fair trial.

I've set up feedly and am having a similar experience to Ben.

Feedly uses GoogleReader as a back end.

Same experience with alternatives having bandwidth issues tonight.

They actually have an alternative backend called Normandy, which they'll be transitioning to shortly. (or recently have, I'm not sure)

I have yet to find anything that beats Google Reader for my use.

If you're looking for alternatives, can you list some of the
limitations or missing functionality you see with Google Reader? That
would make it easier to know what options might work for you.

I hadn't heard that yet, and considering that I practically live in
Google Reader, that's depressing.

This is TRAGIC.  Google Reader is second only to email when it comes to things I use from the company.

Think of it this way, while the user base is too small to interest Google, it is still large, and with Google out of the way with their long stagnant offering, smaller, more responsive organizations will be competing for the former Reader users. Hopefully that will mean several solid and actively maintained alternatives.

Feedly looks decent, but I'm trying to find something that works with OSX notifications or Growl.
