Inspired by last night's meeting and the new Tulsa folks I met, I'm
determined we WILL get a group started in Tulsa, by golly.

And to really put the pressure on, I'm going to name the folks who I
know have shown some interest in getting together.

Brad, Carlos (met last night in Edmond) and a couple friends

Anyone I missed, I apologize. But anyway, if only half of us make it
to the first meeting, I'd say that's enought to justify the effort.

My employer has nice meeting rooms with projectors. I'm sure we can
get some wireless access as well.

So, what's the best night of the week for you guys? I assume weekends
are sorta off limits. Meeting rooms at work are the most available on
Thursday and Fridays. What do you say we plan to meet next week on
Thursday at 7:00 p.m.? If that's too soon or bad for people, we can
shoot for the next week or the next or...

Brad, would you be willing to come and share about your RailsDay
submission? I haven't decided what, but I plan to give a beginner Ruby
talk of some sort (because that's all I really am anyway :-).

I'm typically busy on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings. Monday
and Wednesday in the evenings and Saturday mornings work best for me.
I'll probably be dragging some people in tow if I can make it. To
follow Tim's example, here are their names:

Tim Nelson
Samuel Goodwin

Only a few months out of Python Rehab and now he has to drag others
down with him... ;)

Best of luck with your group Tim. I hope you guys get lots of people.

We still expect you at OK.rb meetings though. We know where you
live. Don't make us come up there. :D

I knew I should've held out in Joplin a while longer ... oh well, good luck
getting folks involved Tim. I'm excited to see the Tulsa.rb getting off
the ground.

hmm, maybe if you keep your meetings offset from the OK.rb, they could
come up and help bolster your numbers every once in a while. After all,
you did it for them.

Well, I was thinking about this. What about using Skype and some form
of remote viewing software (VNC?) to see the presentation remotely?
Either that, or we Tulsa people are gonna have to charter a bus to
Edmond every quarter :-).

I can't do it often, but I'm certainly willing to come up for a
meeting some time.

My experience with trying things like that has been pretty poor, so
far. It really works well one-on-one, but really seems to fall apart
for larger configurations. :(

Well, I will still come to the OK.rb meetings. Wouldn't miss it for
the world. But I'd also like to start something a little closer to
home for those of us who don't enjoy driving so far.

How do you suppose we tap into all the people in Edmond, OKC, Tulsa,
and elsewhere that use or want to use Ruby? Have you found that word
of mouth is the only way it works, or is it possible to get the word
out other ways, too?

I know Pat has suggested we go to the local LUG and give a talk, which
I might do if I get a bit more confidence in myself. Do you guys have
other ideas?

I have a hard time believing that only twenty or so people like Ruby
in this area of the state.

Glad to hear it. We would miss you.

Sure.

I've been:

* Posting to Ruby Talk about the meetings.
* Keeping up a page on Rubyholic and the Ruby wiki.
* Adding announcements for meetings to my book's page on Amazon.com. ;)
* Mentioning the group to anyone I think is interested.

Nothing too original really, but it seems to be working so far.

Yeah, I have thought of targeting some computer groups here in OKC.
I'm pretty sure John Hornbeck is involved with the LUG in his area,
so he might have some more tips on this.

Well, I was mostly teasing, but I do think there's room to share occasional
meetings between any groups that wre close. Defining close seems to be
the hard part though.

All good plans. I've also had some luck with:
* posting on 43 Things.
* reading a Ruby Book on the bus ride into work

James, have you thought about coordinating an author's appearance
at any bookstores in the area? If you showed up to sign books and
talk a bit about Ruby (and brought some OK.rb/Tulsa.rb bookmarks or
business cards), that might help both your book sales and the local
Ruby Brigades.

You might also look at web design groups, local schools, and libraries.

Very clever.

My local Barnes & Noble carries an entire *one* copy of my book. I'm
not thinking it's a huge seller around here. <laughs>

I almost wonder if I wouldn't have more luck at the local Apple Store.

I know nothing about these things though.

I know at least one of the guys at the apple store knows about
ruby/textmate. I mentioned it in there and he seemed to know what i was
talking about. I might be worth giving them a call and seeing if they
are interested in "sponsoring" an event of some sort. I know they host
clinics and things in the store for customers..so ya never know...
