Great news! I just received an announcement from Kent State University
Press that they will be releasing Joe Reinhart's new book: A GERMAN
HURRAH! Civil War Letters of Friedrich Bertsch and Wilhelm Stangel,
9th Ohio Infantry, in January. This looks to be a great addition to
the Ohio Civil War library. Merry Christmas!!! Steve W.

Speaking of the 9th Ohio, they captured the flag of the Gillespie
Guards, a company of the 19th Tennessee Infantry, at Mill Springs in
January, 1862. Several men of the regiment took the flag back to
Cincinnati and gave it to the Turner Society. It has since disappeared.

I would appreciate any clues as to what might have happened to the
relics of the Turner Society - which were pretty considerable having
items sent to it from Cincinnati's German regiments throughout the war -
and especially this flag.

Also missing and sent to Cincinnati - the flag of Crew's Tennessee
Battalion. This was captured on the Union Navy gunboat the Tennessee
River Raid. One of the gunboats had a civilian pilot, John Duble, of
Cincinnati, and he got the flag and sent it to the Cincinnati Commercial
newspaper office where it was displayed.

Any help with these two flags is appreciated.

As I recall from speaking with my grandfather and great grandmother
(my mother's family were members of the Turners) the original building
suffered a devastating fire and the contents were destroyed. Having
said that, I have seen some of the 9th OVI's war booty stored in the
hall next door to Music Hall, including a captured mountain howitzer.
Good luck with your hunting. SW.

Hello Steve,

The building used by the Civil War era Turner Society was torn down
sometime after World War 2 I have found and I wondered if the collection
of relics was dispersed at that time? The Cincinnati Historical Society
has the records of the Turners but I have not yet been there to go
through them.

Is this storage building you mention below still standing?

Greg, the "hall next door" to Music Hall Steve is referring to is Memorial Hall (built as a Civil War memorial hall) in Cincinnati's Over the Rhine area, and it not only still stands but is used for occasional concerts, etc. Dave Neuhardt

Hi Dave,

Did you used to belong to the Dayton CWRT?

Do you know if this building still has relics from the old Turner Society - those that were sent to them during the Civil War?

Greg; Memorial Hall has some items from the 9th OVI. There was a fire
at the Turner building on the upper floor before it closed. It
destroyed the bowling alley and some other rooms and their contents. I
do not know if there were any CW artifacts destroyed - frankly, I
doubt that anyone would have that info. Steve.

Greg, Steve, and Dave--

One of our Cincinnati CWRT members, knowing of Greg's search for the
19th TN flag captured by the 9th OVI, talked to a friend of his who
previously was a curator at Memorial Hall but is not there now. She
said that there are no artifacts left at Memorial Hall, that many
items had been moved to the Cincinnati Historical Society (as we have
been told by others.) She also offered the opinion that some items had
been stolen over a period of years.

I am not sure how this fits with the chronology of some of the
previous messages (the fire, etc.), but it does seem to confirm that
there are no historical materials left at MH.

Thanks,
Dan
