to Ohio in the Civil War
I was recently down at Gettysburg at the new visitor center and my
wife and I sat down to "play" with their computers that allow you to
reserach and access information. I typed in my wife's maiden name of
"Davis" and approx 5 davis's (pictures) came up. Upon first glance I
noticed an amazing simlilarity in apperance of one of the soldiers to
my deceased father in-law. He had a peculiar head shape and ear size.
I asked my wife to come take a look and she immediately saw the
resemblance.

My wifes grandfather was from Boardman OHio, Nahoning county...I
assume it is possible that my wifes great grandfather may have also
been from the area.

Any suggestions on how I might further research this topic would be
greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately,,,,My wifes family is mostly gone now...and there are no
records of lineage.

Bob--

There are 179 entries for men named William Davis in the Official
Roster of Ohio units, so it will take a little work to narrow it
down!

First, did the information with the photograph that you looked at
include a unit identification?
Second, do you know if Mr. Davis had and used a middle initial?
Third, when you indicate that he was from Mahoning County, do you know
if he lived there after the war as well?

These questions should help narrow down your search, and suggest some
sources to use.

Rick Baumgartner's Buckeye Blood: Ohio at Gettysburg includes a photo
of 1st Sgt William B. Davis, 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company E,
who was wounded on July 2. He is identified as being from Williamsport
in Pickaway County, south of Columbus, so this may not be the right
person.

Thanks,
Dan Reigle

I could kick myself...I didnt right down any unit info...I just started thinking about researching this once I got home and
we began talking.

All I remember is Ohio, 2nd day wounded and he looked a great deal like my Father-in-law.

I will take your advice and maybe use it as an excuise to go back down to Gettysburg.
Their New Visitor's Center is reason enough!
I saw the refurbished Cyclorama presentation for the first time and was absolutely floored!
