to Ohio in the Civil War
I am currently doing research on my Great Great Grandpa Jason Brown.
He was in Fuller's Ohio Brigade, 43rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company
G. He was postmaster of Smithfield, Jefferson County, Ohio. He wrote a
letter to Adjutant General Buckingham requesting permission to recruit
a Company. He wrote a second letter indicating that he could not
report at the requested date, that it would take a much longer time as
the men were so scattered about. He mustered in Dec. 13, 1861 at Mount
Vernon, Knox County, Ohio as a private, immediately promoted to
Sergeant and by the end of the war he was a 1st Lieutenant. He fought
in battles in such places as New Madrid, Island 10 and Corinth,
Mississippi. Was in the Battle for Atlanta. Was with Sherman in his
"March to the Sea" to Savanna up through the Carolinas and Viginia and
in the Grand Review in Washington DC. I have his 1st Lieutenant's
sword and my Mom has a 16" X 20" photograph of him in his Union unifom
with Enfield rifle with fixed sword bayonet, hardee hat, Sergeant's
chevrons and NCO's sword very likely taken in Mount Vernon, Knox
County, Ohio. I currently have two books: "The History of Fuller's
Ohio Brigade, 1861-1865: It's Great March, With Roster Portraits,
Battle Maps And Biographies" by Major Charles H. Smith. and a paper
presented by John Wallace Fuller "Our Kirby Smith: a paper read before
the Ohio Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legionof the
United States, March 2, 1887. Any other recommendations of other
material dealing with Fuller's Brigade or the 43rd OVI would be
appreciated.
