Hello,

My 95 year old father-in-law is writing the story of his grandfather
who served in the Civil War. I am looking for any information on the
47th OVVI or OVI. We know a book was written about the 47th and there
is mention of Harry Hallsted in this book. Any information anyone can
send me would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Denise Hallsted

According to the list of pension records they have at National Archives there is no record of a Harry Hallsted in the 47th Ohio Volunteer Infantry but there are pension records on James W. Hallsted and Peter Hallsted.  James started out as a private in Company E of the 47th O.V.I. but was promoted to 1st lieutenant in Company K.  Peter also was in Company E.  According to the National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System listings Peter was at first a corporal and then got promoted to sergeant.  There was only a pension for a widow listed for Peter and they have him as a member of Company E, although the CWSSS lists him as being in both Company E and K.

You might try searching the county he was from and there might be a
county geneological society with some family histories That is how I
found out about the Gambles of Crosscreek Ohio and was able to
determine that my GGGrandpa Thomas A. Gamble was in the 2nd OVI and
157th OVI. And that my GGGGrandpa, William Gamble was in John
Brarricksman's Company of the 2nd Pennsylvania Militia and helped
build and garrison Ft. Meigs , Ohio, War of 1812.

Thank you for your information. I found the two Hallsteds you
mentioned [Peter and James] in my search. But so far no Harry.

Hi Bruce,

Thank you for your advice. I don't remember where the original
information came from that my father-in-law has saying his grandfather
was in the 47th regiment O.V.V.I. He had a book on the 47th which was
misplaced and I found it again in the Library of Congress in this book
Peter and James W. Hallsted are the only Hallsteds listed. The Harry
Hallsted in question was from Blanchester, OH, Second Creek Rd. area
and we were told he joined the army for Clinton County. This has
certainly turned into a learn as you go experience for me and your
help if much appreciated.

Hi Denise,

Is it possible that Harry's first name is Henry? I searched the 1860 U.S.
Census for Blanchester, Clinton, OH and did not find a Harry.
This is a good mystery!

Hi Denise,

This is the "nature of the research beast."  But blank walls of frustration do lead to other ways of thinking outside the box sometimes.

Hi Again,

Don't necessessarily rely on a first name.  Roster books (reliable)--meaning the "Roster for the state of Ohio" is not always accurate.  Sometimes you have to rely upon Regimental "Descriptive Rolls"---ie. Birthdate, color of hair, eyes, etc., if this is known and "Morning Reports."

I've been working on family genealogy and find that one family has a plethora of information while another one (even near me) has virtually nothing. I live in Fulton Co., which is said to be the last county developed in Ohio because of the Black Swamp. Add to that the fact that so many buildings/houses burned over the years that some things don't exist anymore.
