to Ohio in the Civil War
My previous thoughts were that all the CW musicians were boys--and
this dispelled that myth when I was looking for Edward J. Bruner who
came to Ohio in the 1850's and worked as a tailor in Delaware, Ohio--
lived in a boarding house in the town. He met and married the
daughter of a doctor/farmer in/near the village of Radnor Ohio, her
name being Caroline Cox. To them, two sons were born prior to the
CW.

It was reported that Edward J. Bruner/Brunner "died in the CW) and, in
fact, his "widow" Caroline went on to marry my great great great
uncle, Thomas J. Williams--they left Ohio and made their way first to
Iowa to stay for a brief amount of time with his sister--and then went
on to Elbert County Colorado.

But what happened to Edward J. Bruner/Brunner? Where did he die?
Where is he buried?.. Bruner/Brunner family on Ancestry indicates that
he died in Perryville KY in 1865; however the actual battle of
Perryville was 3 yrs prior. No one I contacted at the Perryville
battlegrounds can find any listing for Edward J. Bruner--and in fact,
their list of what Ohio regiments that fought there did not include
the Ohio 4th... It was suggested that I check with the cemetery 30
miles away from Perryville where those who died in the battle were
buried, but thus far no luck in contacting them.

My next thought is to write for the complete CW military records for
Edward J Bruner--but was hoping there might be other resources that
I've somehow overlooked... Suggestions are definitely welcomed...

Ann,

According to civilwardata.com ...

Edwin J. Brunner, age 38, enlisted as a Musician in Co I, and was
Mustered Out 21 June 1864

In June 1864, the 4th Ohio was assigned to the 2nd Corps, Army of the
Potomac and was actively engaged in the Overland Campaign in Virginia
- specifically, that was right around the time that the battle of Cold
Harbor was being fought. It is possible that he died on his way home
after he was discharged.

I highly recommend that you do request a copy of his Service records
as well as a copy of his wife's Pension file, assuming she filed for a
Pension as his widow. Good luck in your research.

Hi Brent:  Thank you for the additional information and I will definitely follow up ...

With regard to pension:  Have not found any application for his widow Caroline nor for his two sons.

At present I had hoped that I could piece this puzzle together--but I'm still left with Bruner family records stating he died in '65 in Perryville KY---and no actual record of his death there nor a burial site.  And as you brought up Cold Harbor, VA, it would make me wonder why he would have been transported to that area when he needed to be in central Ohio--definitely out of the way with regard to rail lines...and out of the way if transporting by Ohio River..

Thank you for your suggestions, definitely appreciated!!

Anne

Ann:
Just a long shot, but is it possible that some of the info on Edwin's place of death, Perryville, KY, might be off, meaning that maybe he died in Perrysville, Ohio, which is in Ashland County?  If he died in Kentucky, I found several people named Edwin Bruner who were buried in Owensboro, Kentucky, but were not the individual in question because they were born much later than the Civil War soldier.  However two of those buried in Kentucky were born about the time of the war.  They might be relatives.

The Bruner individuals buried in Owensboro, Kentucky, were listed on www.find a grave.

Hi Richard:

I would agree that in some instances that could be a possibility; however, I don't live too far from Ashland Co, Ohio..and with Ashland Co being that close to Delaware Co, his wife would have "brought him home" and would have buried him properly in Radnor Cemetery where the many generations of our family are buried... so in reality, it is highly unlikely that Perryville Ohio would have been where he ended up-- just too close to home in central Ohio..

Yes there is always the chance that he could be buried under another name--Edwin, EJ, or his middle name was Jacob, so that is possible he would have been buried under that name as well...but I haven't found anything in any case to substantiate that.

Since the Bruner family member lived in Utah and in her broken way told me she and her husband (before he passed away) found this in the mormon info, I contacted Ancestry.com's "hire an expert" and asked them if ALL the recrods that are available to us on Ancestry have been given or are some CW records held there in SLC --- they said that that could possibly be the case... But why the source4 documentation wasn't given by the Bruners I will never know----the lady's husband died and she has a brain tumor and suffered a stroke--so it is very difficult to find anything out.  I have asked her to please locate the info in her records and have her family copy and send it to me to substantiate the date and place of death...but I don't seem to be receiving anything from her... nor phone calls from her children..so I'm on my own with this apparently.

Thank you for your response--

After checking with people in the know at the Perryville battle grounds and finding no death info for Edward, I'm starting to wonder if there was a chance he could have gone AWOL... I never gave that a thought until I saw an episode of "Who Do You Think You Are"...

I think the next step is to order the complete military records for EJ Brunner/Bruner and see if the Edward J Bruner "musician" with Ohio 4th Infantry is the right one--the age is correct--but I know nothing beyond that.  The books located at Rutherford B Hayes Presidential Library having the complete roster in volume form does not give much else.

Thanks again
