William Brooker   *alias*  Joseph Rich

William Brooker served in the Civil War, but under an alias, Joseph Rich.  The CW Pension Index lists both names as the same person. I have found Joseph Rich on the Ohio Civil War Roster (Company E, 25th Inf regiment) - but no William Brooker.

I have not ordered the pension file yet ($$) - but very curious.  Are any of you aware of other soldiers in this unit using an alias and the reasons for it?

Thanks for any insight....

Thanks for your reply. I know some soldiers served under an alias but Ido not know ant specific ones in this regiment. One reason could be if they deserted they would be harder to find, or they did not want to be found by someone.

I don't think it would be desertion - he was too young. He was an immigrant from England, arrived about 1860 and he enlisted in 1864 (age 18-20.) I haven't been able to locate him in any of the censuses prior to 1880 and from 1880 on I can only find him in Pennsylvania and New York.

I may have to wait until I see the pension files before I get any answers.
Thanks for your reply,
Suzanne
