Doc... you know I wanted an Android phone even before you showed me your Hero. Is there anything I should know that isn't all over the web already? I'm leaning toward the HTC Droid Eris.

I like the UI better, and the form factor... and the virtual keyboards seem better tuned. About the only thing I don't like is the Eris has added some little capacitive buttons to the bottom of the screen, which need to be MASHED to work. Camera appears to be slightly better than the Motorola. Graphics not as good but very usable. Speaker not as good but usable.

I got a Motorolia Droid last Sat. so far I love the phone. I don't know about the camera for the Eris but the Droid has an awesome camera. Graphic wise it's amazing and it also has a faster cpu then the Eris I think. Ohh and the speaker on the Droid is the best sound of any phone I have ever heard.

Yea but who else would you go with? T-Mobile = Bad Phones Bad Coverage, AT&T = Good Phones Bad Coverage, Sprint = Ok Phones Horrible Coverage, Alltel = Great Phones Great Coverage.....but Verizon bought them out. :P

Unless you can inform me of otherwise I really don't see a good choice beyond Verizon for a phone that has data service.

My Friday night:

Watched most awesome video lecture:
http://freevideolectures.com/Computer_Science/Principles_of_Programming_Languages.html

Found out about the strange Lisp machine:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisp_machine
Funny the way we have become so comfortable with abstraction.

Read interesting article on "Cloud Computing":
http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2009/11/the-cloud-a-short-introduction.ars
Love the distinction made between storage and compute cycles as resources.

And learned that there are three levels of the "Cloud":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrastructure_as_a_service

...and the night is still young.

p.s. I have been using the Droid for a week now and I am very pleased with it.

If you can wait there are strong rumours Verizon will be releasing the HTC Snapdragon/Passion on Black Friday. The Snapdragon will be similar to the Eris with a faster processor, bigger and better screen and will probably run Android 2.0. You will also get the Sense UI.

So if you like the form factor of the Eris but want the power of the Droid the Snap Dragon might be the answer. However I suspect it will be at the $200 price point.

Personally I'm going to wait until December and see what else stacks up against Droid.

Cheers,
Zam

I believe that's entirely true. I spoke with someone at the Verizon store who confirmed the Passion releases next month. (Name may be something else). I expect it'll be a 1ghz processor running Android 2.0 and the Sense UI. The form factor may be a little larger, and I suspect it goes for $200. I went with the Eris. It is fast enough. Slightly hard on batteries, not any worse than my old phone in that respect. I also expect the existing Eris and Hero handsets will get an upgrade to Android 2.0 in January.
