Operations Manager

Pescadero, California

Background:

Pie Ranch is a unique food system education and advocacy non-profit organization, and a diversified sustainable farm on the San Mateo Coast, about 55 miles south of San Francisco. Our mission is to inspire and connect people to know the source of their food, and to work together to bring greater health to the food system from seed to table.  Our home near Pescadero, CA, includes our original 14-acre working farmstead, and an adjacent 13-acre parcel of farmland, the historic Isaac Steele Ranch, which fronts Highway 1.  These neighboring pieces of land are each shaped like a slice of pie, and also grow the ingredients to make pie. Since 2005, Pie Ranch has worked with San Francisco youth around food & farming, providing repeat visits to Pie Ranch and engaging youth back in the classroom. In addition to our work with youth, we also train emerging farmers in sustainable farming practices through our year-round apprenticeship and summer internship programs. Our efforts to build a healthy food system also include organizing work at the regional level where we are engaging in policy change on the Central Coast to create a supportive environment. We are currently looking for a knowledgeable and experienced professional to oversee the finances and operations of our growing nonprofit.

 

Job Responsibilities:

Budget & Fiscal Management

·      Oversees and coordinates annual budget development, including presentation to Board of Directors and staff,

·      Manages monthly fiscal management, including providing financial reports to staff for program management and reviewing financial position with Executive Director on a regular basis,

·      Manages daily financials, including handling cash, processing accounts payable and receivable, reconciling accounts,

·      Manages, in conjunction with CPA, annual tax filings and financial audits, and

·      Reviews organizational financial statements with the Treasurer of the Board on a regular basis.

 

Human Resources Management

·      Manages and processes monthly payroll for employees,

·      Oversees administration of employee benefits, including negotiating annual policy renewals,

·      Develops draft HR policies and updates staff manual, and

·      Attends to regulatory compliance and administration.

 

Coordination with Development Activities

·      Coordinate with development team to ensure that funders are receiving accurate financials for organization and program-specific budgets, and

·      Conduct monthly reconciliations with development and accounting systems.

 

General Operations Management

·      Manages and negotiates insurance policies, including liability, property, etc.,

·      Oversees administrative systems, including supervision of Development and Operations Assistant,

·      Participates in program activities, as needed.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required:

·      Detail-oriented individual with strong organizational and multi-tasking skills,

·      Strong knowledge of accounting practices,

·      Proven experience and skills in budgeting, planning and delivery of project outcomes and overall program effectiveness,

·      Strong ability to deliver persuasive and clear verbal and written communications in a variety of media forms and channels, and for diverse audiences ranging from employees, board members, vendors, clients, and program participants,

·      Demonstrated proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite,

·      Proficiency with appropriate information-technology tools for management,

·      Ability to work effectively in a demanding, high-energy environment and manage multiple tasks and priorities while maintaining a sense of humor,

·      U.S. citizen or legal right to work in the U.S.

 

Education:

·      BA or BS from 4-year college, plus three years of experience working with nonprofit financial systems (e.g. cash handling & processing, developing operating budgets), human resources (payroll management, benefits administration), and general business management; OR

·      AA 2-year college, plus five years of experience with financial systems (e.g. cash handling & processing, developing operating budgets), human resources (payroll management, benefits administration), and general business management.

 

Work-Specific

·      Access to computer for work-product development and for communication with colleagues and collaborators,

·      Valid California Driver’s License, and ability to drive and access to a vehicle for travel to bank, farm, and other work-related duties

·      Criminal background checks required

 

Desired:

·      Interest in and knowledge of agricultural and food system issues

·      Knowledge of education and youth development issues

·      Experience working collaboratively in a team environment with successful outcomes

·      Ability and willingness to work some weekends, evenings, and occasionally travel on short notice

·      Professional, friendly, and enthusiastic personality

HOURS AND COMPENSATION:

Urban Youth Development Coordinator - Pie Ranch

Position Summary:

We are seeking to hire an Urban Youth Development Coordinator for our partnership with Mission High School (MHS) in San Francisco. Pie Ranch has established farm-based youth programming for seven seasons with MHS by engaging students in food systems education, culinary arts and sustainable farming. Through in-class programming, on-site field trips, and our youth employment program, we have developed a strong relationship with students, staff and faculty at MHS. This position will continue to grow and sustain our partnership while realizing the goals of the program. We also have similar programs with Oceana High School in Pacifica and Pescadero High School in Pescadero.

Professional Duties

·      Collaborate with MHS faculty to integrate food systems & farming education into classroom curriculum through presentations, culinary education & discussions.

·      Work in collaboration with Pie Ranch program staff to develop curriculum, schedule and coordinate field trips and other youth programs.

·      Grow the relationship between Mission High and Pie Ranch to improve access for the whole school community to the physical and cultural context of farming.

·      Coordinate and lead Pie Ranch field trips with MHS teachers.

·      Supervise youth employees for Pie Ranch’s HomeSlice youth development program; transport HomeSlice youth interns to and from Pie Ranch from San Francisco in our nine-passenger van.

·      Support Pie Ranch’s Mission High School-based Community Supported Agriculture program through coordinating logistics & youth involvement.

·      Work alongside youth to teach and model healthy relationships with food, work, and one another.

·      Cultivate leadership within the student community to set priorities for bringing healthy change to the food system.

·      Document and track youth participation in Pie Ranch programs through written reports and other media; work with program staff on creating effective evaluative tools.

·      Participate in Pie Ranch staff meetings and organizational development.

·      Represent Pie Ranch at regional and national food system and food justice workshops and conferences.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 Required:

·      Experience working with youth of diverse backgrounds in a classroom or garden context.

·      Experience in sustainable food systems/food justice work.

·      Youth leadership development experience and skills.

·      Strong organizational, coordination, and collaboration skills.

·      Strong ability to communicate clearly and enthusiastically with students, teachers, and school administrators.

·      Experience with developing curriculum, educational tools, lesson plans and activities related to sustainable agriculture and food justice.

·      Proficiency with Word and Excel.

·      Ability to participate physically in garden and landscape work.

·      Access to a computer for communications.

·         Ability to plan and manage youth program budgets.

·         Ability to drive and access to a vehicle for regular travel to and from Pie Ranch.

·      Ability to work 130 hours per month. Hours will be set in conjunction with school and Pie Ranch schedules with some flexibility.

 

Desired:

·         Proficiency in Spanish

·         Experience in sustainable farming or gardening.

·      Experience and interest in educational program evaluation.

·      Commitment to personal health and interest in cooking and nutrition.

·      Experience with developing evaluative tools.

 

EDUCATION/REQUIREMENTS:

·      BA or BS from 4-year college in environmental sciences, education, or related field, plus one year of experience working in experiential education, youth leadership development, or other relevant field;

-OR-

·      AA from 2-year college, plus two years of experience working in experiential education, youth leadership development, or other relevant field.

 

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

·      Valid California Driver’s License

·      Criminal background checks required

 

HOURS

This is a three-quarter time position split between San Francisco and Pie Ranch with an anticipated weekly average of 30 hours, and no more than 130 hours per month.  Some hours will be set in conjunction with school schedule and some will be flexible. Travel to Pie Ranch 1-2 days per week, sometimes more depending on the season. There is the possibility of this position transitioning to full-time in the future.

 

SALARY/COMPENSATION

Salary is commensurate with experience. Compensation includes a comprehensive benefits package.
