++ AGENDA FOR THIS WEEK’S MEETING
Our 12 noon luncheon for Wednesday, June 27th will be held at
Italiano’s restaurant, 4801 North Lincoln in OKC. Our meeting this
week will consist of reviewing the elections and perhaps talking some
strategy. Hopefully, some of the candidates we backed will be at our
meeting to share their perspectives on their races. We will also elect
up to 3 persons to serve as Vice Presidents to fill Richard Engle’s
recently vacated seat.
++ ANNOUNCEMENTS
* THURSDAY EVENING - PONCA CITY AREA - Our good friends Art and
Sheila Briesch will be presenting their power point presentation on
Agenda 21 and land conservation easements at the Kay County
Republican party meeting this Thursday evening June 28th. The meeting
begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at Providence Baptist Church,
1301 E. Bradley Ave. in Ponca City.
* TUESDAY, JULY 3RD AND WEDNESDAY, JULY 4TH - BETHANY AREA - Our
good friend John Michener is the regional manager for the organization
Justice For All, which is dedicated to making abortion unthinkable
through loving dialogue, changing hearts one at a time. Following a
training session they set up on college campuses or at events very
large and graphic pictures depicting the tragedy of abortion. Those
pictures always draw a crowd at which point those trained by JFA enter
into dialogue to change people’s minds on the subject.
Next Tuesday, July 3rd will be a training session at the Northwest
Church of Christ, 4301 NW 23rd street in OKC. Lunch and check in is at
12 noon and the seminar will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. If you want
to get involved, register for the seminar at
regist...@jfaweb.org
or call
(316) 683-6426. You could also call John at
(405) 326-1678.
Those who go through the training on Tuesday will be ready to engage
on Wednesday, Independence day, at the Bethany Freedom Festival. This
is one of the most effective ministries which saves lives of the
unborn and changes people’s minds on the subject that I know of. Here
is a chance to become effective and make a difference.
++ PRO-BUSINESS OR ANTI-BUSINESS, SETTING THE RECORD STRAIT
I believe the daily Oklahoman is at risk of running out of ink in its
efforts to talk about the rift in the Republican party. A rift that
supposedly is between the “social conservatives” or “ideologues” on
one side and the pro-business lawmakers on the other side. In one
article this past week, there was even a reference to the (anti-
business crowd). The Oklahoman seems to have a difficult time in
figuring out what the rift is really all about. I sometimes wonder if
they really want to know.
For the record, it is my suggestion that everyone wants a vibrant
economy, an economy where we as individuals and our children can have
good jobs or own and operate profitable businesses. The struggle isn’t
about if we want a good economy, the struggle is about what kind of an
economy are we going to have and how will it work.
For the sake of this commentary, may I suggest these 3 definitions:
1) A free market capitalist economy as envisioned by our founding
fathers is where the individual owns and operates a business free of
almost all government regulations. Success or failure is determined by
market forces. In this type of an economy, government never competes
against privately owned businesses and it never picks winners and
losers by granting a competitive edge to one individual or entity over
another.
2) A capitalist economy based on fascism, as was experienced in Italy
prior to and during WWII, is where the government dosen’t own or
operate a business, but exercises near complete control over
businesses through regulations. In Italy, they told the business world
who to hire, what to pay, how much to produce, when to produce and
granted the privileged locations or opportunities to the businessmen
they chose. In a modern day setting, this type of economy is rife with
grants, subsidies and kickbacks (tax credits). A good way to describe
this philosophy would be central planning, economic development or
public-private partnerships.
3) A capitalist economy based on socialism is where the government,
not the individual, owns and controls the businesses. In its full
blown version, all people essentially work for the government and the
government re-distributes resources as it sees fit. The people
basically work for the government and get an allowance to live on.
Today in America and in Oklahoma our economy is a mixture of all three
of the above. Government owns (socialism) some businesses, especially
trash services, entertainment venue facilities and in some cases
retail businesses such as restaurants, hotels and retail facilities.
Much more prevalent is the situation where government is deciding
which politically well connected businessman or entities get the
favored location or the opportunity to do business. Government decides
who gets the subsidies or kick backs (tax credits). We hear lawmakers
and candidates use the words “economic development” as if it is their
responsibility to develop the economy. If it is the responsibility of
the politician to develop the economy, what kind of an economy will
you have? It will not be a free market economy but one based more on
fascism! For the most part, this is the kind of economy the State
Chamber of Commerce is pushing.
To those wanting a free market economy, the incentives for the
business world won’t be subsidies and kick backs, but rather the
elimination of ALL business taxes and the reduction of almost all
regulations. The rift in the Republican party over the economy is
between those with free market ideas versus those with primarily
fascist ideas. Truth is, you can’t give hundreds of millions of
dollars away in subsidies and kickbacks and have a low tax base. If
you are going to give away big money, your tax base has to be high
enough to have the money to give away.
If those clashing ideas become the center of debate, as they should,
we won’t have foolish labels used like pro-business or anti-business.
I look forward to seeing everyone this Wednesday.
