Hello Occupiers,
We received the following call to action from Planned Parenthood Mar
Monte (PPMM), which provides health services for women, LGBT people,
and the needy in our community.
PPMM needs our help. They are trying to open a healthcenter in South
San Francisco and getting horrendous pushback!
TOMORROW, there will be a conditional use hearing at South City's
Planning Commission meeting regarding PPMM's center site. The
opposition has sent hundreds of letters and will be there in full
force opposing our efforts. About six weeks ago, PPMM had a routine
hearing about parking needs and there were over fifty members of the
opposition -- all organized by conservative churches -- loudly and
angrily speaking against PPMM. They were called some nasty names that
night.
As a gay teenager in the late 1990s, I remember making use of a PP
clinic in RWC to get my very first HIV test. Despite being out of the
closet since I was sixteen, I remember appreciating that the test was
completely confidential and that it only cost me a nominal fee. (I
also remember railing at the two assholes who parked outside every
Friday in camping chairs with posters of aborted foeti.)
Back in 2011, PPMM was about to open a clinic in RWC but after a grand
total of about four anti-woman, conservative Christian activists
raised hell, the city shut the PPMM plan down with the "there's not
enough parking" argument (in the parking lot they would have had to
share with Enterprise Rent-a-Car on El Camino). Hmm, interesting that
the City is willing to enforce strict parking rules against PPMM,
considering they let another PP (Paul Powers) flout all the parking
regquirements in the book in order to help him privatize the Redwood
City waterfront at Pete's Harbor and Peninsula Marina.
But I digress. :)
I bring up my experience with PP as a teenager to point out that PP
provides critical care to LGBT people, particularly LGBT youth, as
well as a whole range of women's reproductive health services, and
free to nearly free services for those who need it. It isn't just
about abortions, which is what the religious right would have you
think.
If you could attend TOMORROW's hearing and speak out on behalf of
PPMM, that would be great. Having as many supporters living in San
Mateo County attend, particularly folks who live or work in South
City/the north county, is important. If you can’t attend, please
consider signal boosting on your own emails lists/social media
platforms, or writing a short letter voicing your support to South San
Francisco's Planning Commission.
Thursday, May 2, 2013 (TOMORROW) at 7:30 PM
The SSF Municipal Services Building at 33 Arroyo Dr.
A letter of support can be written and sent to City of South San
Francisco Planning Division, 400 Grand Avenue, South San Francisco, CA
94080.
Solidaritty forever,
James
