circus signage

Driving along Liesbeeck Parkway I am struck by the prolification of
signage at the circus.
While lauding their work ... I feel that their signage has become
unsightly and actually quite offensive. Besides my personal
views .....their signage is illegal. I have approched a senior
member of Obsid who has declined to take any action in this matter
becuase of the good work they do and in his opinion they are not
unsightly. The point I wish to raise here is that if the signage is
illegal then is Obsid not beholden to take some sort of remedial
action.

assess the signage and apply local laws to it? just a thought.

My thoughts were to get Obsid to engage with the circus people to get them
to tone down their signage and comform without the need for the big stick
approach.

I have had another independent complaint on this subject. I will engage (again) with the circus. As I understand it the problem is with the proliferation of rather rough "parking" signs.. The more formal signs attached to the fence are not the problem.

It doesn't bother me at all - I think it's fun! (And no I'm not a
graffiti fan ;-)
I love the tent, and the fact that there is a circus there, and the
signs are all part of that. For me it's part of being a in a vibrant,
active community where interesting things are happening.
Sure it'd be lovely if they had the money to make fancy signs, but if
they don't, then I'd rather have those signs than none at all.

Maybe someone in Obs who is good at making signs could help them
improve the signs? Maybe this would help alleviate the concerns of
those who don't like them.

As far as I am concerned it is not only the parking signs.........most of their signage is rough.  The issue I have is the unsightly impact of the sheer volume of their signage....yesterday's count = 15 in a short stretch.

'Circus', Parking' and 'Coffee'; not the most offensive things I've ever seen but I would agree that the signs are a bit scruffy.
It would be nice to support the Circus with advice and suggestions rather than just try and make life hard for them.

I agree that some verbal engagement would be the best approach. I like the
idea of having a circus in Obs, but their signage is of such poor quality
that it might even discourage patronage.

On another issue of management and governance Elite taxis seem to have
appropriated the sidewalk in station road as a ramp. I saw one nearly run
someone over recently mounting the curb. This is not a designated metered
taxi rank and I think they should be asked to move as it's dangerous and
discourages pedestrian access.

I am a fan of the circus and the fun aspect of it as well.
 I think they are great.
It's not the so much the style of the signage etc but the number of signs that make it unsightly............around 16 in the short distance.
The other point is that personal points of view are not at isssue.   I am not trying to make life hard for them per se.

 There are  municipal regulations to be conformed to..... and selective application of the law is not on.

They are making life hard for themselves I am afraid. Dmitri knows the law and he had take down all his signs a few years ago, It would not surprise me if he has not already received a take down notice from the council. They usually give a fairly generous time limit in which the offender must removes his signs or have them removed by the council with associate costs for the offenders account.

I agree that a friendly agreement between the residents organizations and te circus is the way to go. Also those signs do not need to be all day - they could be erected just before performances - so there are other solutions.

As some one already mentioned the C3 system is probably the way to go to report this to council

Finally the matter of cars parking on the fairly well maintained grass verge cam up at an OCA meeting and the OCA resolved to send a letter to Dmitri asking him not have the cars park across the road in the ample parking there or just further towards Obs where the verge is a gravel surface.

Hi Katherine
Elite taxis are far too elite to respond to being asked to move, I have
tried that on several occasions. They have also been ticketed countless
times by Metro cops, but they are probably too elite to pay their fines.
There is a new by-law in the offing which regulates taxis (ha ha) and one of
the provisions is that a taxi may only park at a taxi rank. We are working
on a traffic plan for Obs and that will include a taxi rank - probably in
Drake Street.
We also asked the City to formally demarcate the trading areas which are
next to the boerewors stand and this they did, so Elite taxis are actually
parking in a trading zone - bless 'em.
We plan to convert that space into a garden and make access difficult by
placing poles and large rocks in the way of parkers.
In the meantime I trust that Obs residents will find an ethical taxi service
for their custom. Even if it's not Elite!

Apropos taxis parking on pavement opposite and just above the Kwikspar..........
How about some of those nice, square and very CHUNKY cement-&-stone blocks that the CCT has positioned along the Cycle Track opposite Hartleyvale to prevent cars from parking at the river's edge.
Those things would stop even big trucks from usurping this space !!!  ??
