I am delighted to announce that the owner of the vacant plot in Molenvliet Road next to Koornhoop has given us permission to use the plot.
It is our intention to repair the back fence, put a gate on the front and generally to clean it up. Security in the area will be improved.
Currently we pay R3.00 per bag to remove street waste, 90% of which can be made into compost and almost all of the balance can be recycled. We will be diverting that waste to the plot and processing it into compost or re-cycled material.
Obs residents with green waste are welcome to use the facility. Pepper Square car park is no longer receiving green waste. Any plants dropped there can be re-planted in our increasing number of gardens. Cuttings can be propagated by the Obs Junior School in a project which we are supporting.
We envisage four igloos, one each for glass, paper, plastic and cans. We clear up about 100 bags a day. We envisage 2 people working together in a four hour shift to sort the waste. Employment opportunities will be offered to Fountain House and or Loaves and Fishes.
The bags will be delivered to the site by the Obsid bakkie, probably twice a day. Collection of recycled waste will take place as needed, we guess about once per month. We will keep the site clean and quiet at all times.
The size of the land is far in excess of our requirements, so we will also develop two possibilities around growing vegetables on the rest of the land. Firstly, NGOs involved with feeding schemes in Obs will be offered space to grow vegetables. These NGOs include Loaves and Fishes, Home Street Peoples’ Ministry, Fountain House and any others who step forward. Secondly we will offer allotments to residents who enjoy growing vegetables, but who do not have the space at home. The supply of water is the main obstacle here, but we are seeking a solution.
We are happy that this project fits our mandate. Obsid will so substantially reduce its carbon footprint that we are following up on our right to sell carbon credits. It can be viewed as a pilot towards greater things in recycling in Obs.
In spite of certain opposition ……………. I still love Obs

Just seen a new e-waste place in Landsdowne road where there always
used to be a second hand car dealer on that island piece.

E-waste: I recently saw that an e-waste place has opened in Lansdowne
Road in Lower Claremont. Very green painted building.
Otherwise Makro has or had e-waste containers on their parking lot.
If stuck let me know a friend of mine is involved it the launch of e-
waste in RSA.

Hi Dale
You’re jumping the gun! Let’s get up and running first then we’ll see if we can expand our services. Green waste, by my uninformed definition, is garden stuff as opposed to kitchen stuff. Start your own compost heap with your kitchen waste.
