[Obi-devel] question re: has participant

hi OBI'ers--what is the relationship between an object used as part of a process and the process? Is that has_participant/participates_in?  If I use my pen in my right hand to write with, are both the pen and my right hand "participants in" the process? I ask because I need to denote the body part used to do various things--the fact that it's me who is participating is not what's important, so I'm not trying to raise the issue about how much of the dog has to be in the car for the dog to be 'in' the car, for example, or how much of me has to be participating.

 

How do we say "she used her right hand in process X"?  (the right hand is not changed in any way by the experience. :)

i think we sorted this out in the clinical use case example Alan and the rest of us worked a few workshops ago.

we had a PI participating in the investigation (analogous to your right hand) as well as other humans participating as subjects and items such as reagents participating and being consumed. my recollection is that they were all deemed participants. i agree with you it might be nice to identify different ways to participate (controlling the experiment, experiencing the experiment, donating one's life to the experiment) but my recollection was that this level of distinction was not needed and thus just a distraction. if you need it (show me all cases when a hand was the subject) i can contribute supporting use cases as well.

I think if we need to distinguish different participants. We can use
role. For example, human play 'reporting party role', 'sub-investigator
role', and molecular entity (chemicals) play 'reagent role', 'label
role', etc.

right, and this allows the same participant to play multiple roles in the same process. For example, you might want to play both an organizer role and a lecturer role in a workshop.

great idea, but roles need processes to realize; this has always been the stumbling block. 

any suggestions for how to define the process of running an experiment?
