we had a PI participating in the investigation (analogous to your right hand) as well as other humans participating as subjects and items such as reagents participating and being consumed. my recollection is that they were all deemed participants. i agree with you it might be nice to identify different ways to participate (controlling the experiment, experiencing the experiment, donating one's life to the experiment) but my recollection was that this level of distinction was not needed and thus just a distraction. if you need it (show me all cases when a hand was the subject) i can contribute supporting use cases as well.
