I have been absent from the OALUG for a long time, and I was working on my server the other day and realized, I need some help...
I will be making a better effort to join y'all for the next meeting, but there is a few topics I would love to get help with, or at least try to understand better... might be good topics for the next meeting or 3.

Linux Server Optimization and Configuration
Linux Server Tools

Things like that...

I run email, web hosting, proxy and filtering; my server is my router, DNS, DHCP, gateway, and firewall; it runs IPv4 and IPv6, but I would also like to do more with it as a file server, and maybe even look seriously at Asterisk...

My biggest concerns are the troubles I am having with Squid and Dansguardian...
a) I need a better solution?
b) I need to better understand it?
c) I need it better or properly configured?
d) all of the above
e) none of the above

I like to say that I know just enough to be dangerous, so ya might understand where I am coming from. Most of the help I have had on this server came from my friend Tim Riker, who is nothing short of a genius when it comes to Linux (if not a little eccentric)  ;)

What I could really use is help going through the system to verify the proper and optimized configuration of the conf files, etc. I like simple/easy, and I tend to understand the "big picture", and I am not afraid to mess things up (I've done it before)  ;)

So I am open to suggestions and would be willing to lend my server to be the "example of how NOT to do it" if need be (or maybe I actually have some things right and my server could be used as an example of "what to fix" and "how to fix it"...

Anyway, thanks for any help, information, advice, etc...

Hi there,
I use SME Server which is built on CentOS 4 and 5 depending on what
version you use.
www.contribs.org
This server is prebuilt with almost everything you need in it.
DNS
DHCP
Firewall and port forwarding
Email (With Webmail client, Horde) (Wish they would update it with Zimbra)
Website hositng
File Sharing
And it is all edited with a simple web page, there is no GUI just web
pages for editing.
---------------------
Things that I add to it as a offering for my customers
Faxing (Hylafax)
Filtering (Dansguardian)
Webmin
----------------------
As far as VOIP I like Elastix, this is built on Asterisk, and has the
best user interface I have seen so far.

Trixbox is also something you should look at, even though I don't like
the company that updates it now.
http://www.trixbox.org/

I hope this helps

Thank you,
Shane Rose
