For your information, if you purchase cole crop transplants from either a wholesale grower, particularly the big commercial names, or from local box stores and others that carry these for retail purchase. If you see anything suspicious, please bring it into the Extension Office as quickly as possible, so we can get it to the lab for testing. As he says, we don't have this in Ky yet, and we sure don't want it! This is not for plants you would grow yourself or from someone you use locally/regionally in Ky who grows transplants for you- only for those that are purchasing transplants, from large commercial growers, out of State (particularly SC). Let me know if you have questions or concerns. Kim -----Original Message----- From: Seebold, Kenneth Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2013 7:15 PM To: CES-HORTAGENTS Subject: Brassica Downy Mildew All: I recently learned that downy mildew was
found on cabbage, broccoli, and collard transplants in South Carolina. The plants were being commercially grown for sale to retail outlets (big chains and also independent shops). It's probably a little early for seedlings of these crops to be sold to the public customer in KY, but we're not far off from that time. We have not found this disease so far in the state, but I'm sending this to make you aware of the issue and to be on the lookout when transplants hit the retail outlets. We don't see a lot of crucifer downy mildew in Kentucky, and movement of the disease into our state on transplants would be a serious problem. Please let me know if you find something that you think might be downy on crucifers, as we will want to have plants with symptoms and plants adjacent to them destroyed to outbreaks after these plants get set out in gardens and fields. Downy mildew of crucifers thrives in cool
and damp conditions, and can be active until we hit the 80's consistently. To learn more about this disease go to http://plantpath.ifas.ufl.edu/takextpub/FactSheets/pp0033.pdf . The pictures in this publication are old, but will give you an idea of what we're looking for. Please warn folks to be careful with any crucifer transplants that they buy from their local retailers (chains or local shops). Please let me know if you have any questions. I'll keep you posted as we learn more about this. Regards, Kenny ========================= Kenneth W.
