Rather than re-purposing an old laptop, the parallel thread a few days ago
on raspberry pi springs to mind here.
I have never had much luck with dynamic dns in terms of reliability but I
checked with my ISP and I can get a fixed IP for $10 per month on top of my
regular connection which is certainly cheaper than a VPS. I need to do a
simple django site for a friend so I might try with my pi and see how it
goes. Sadly there is no danger of the site blowing my traffic cap.
