I hear a lot about Auckland meetings and Wellington meetings...
Having said that, I'd have very little to say myself at a meeting... but I'd love it if there were some local Python enthusiasts who would like to talk about what they know or what they do. I can possibly arrange one of the lecture theatres in the CS building at Canterbury Uni to hold one if there was any interest.
I'd certainly love to get some live input from someone using Django in the real world - maybe how to set it up and start learning with it - do we have anyone down here with those skills who'd be prepared to talk about it? I'm getting more and more frustrated with Drupal (although I still like PHP) and am itching for an excuse to switch to something else - it may as well be Python based... and I guess that could form the basis for a future talk...
Or am I the lone Christchurch Python guy destined to battle on alone and figure it all out for myself? : )

You might like to also post your appeal on the The Valley in
Christchurch <https://groups.google.com/group/TVIC> mailing list--as
there's >0 Python/Django practitioners on there... (Although they
might all be on here too...)
Since the last organiser skipped town ;) and the whole red zone thing
affected the previous venue I think the lack of an organiser and venue
have affected the regularity of Python gatherings. :)
It sounds like you're volunteering to change that--congratulations! :)
> It sounds like you're volunteering to change that--congratulations! :)
> </snip>
I should have seen that coming... but yeah, I'm happy to do whatever organising is actually required (find a venue, let everyone know, ask people nicely to talk?)
I have a couple of possible / probably venues... but I'm thinking (albeit without first asking) that the lecture theatre in Erskine at Canterbury would be a good place - and given that we teach Python here it should be ok. I might even be able to twist one of the lecturers arms into talking about teaching Python and the switch from Java - with its ups and downs...
Ok - show of hands. Who'd come, and who could/would talk?

Sounds like you've got the bases covered. :)

Sounds like a good start.

I might make it. I would avoid talking as long as possible. :)

Good stuff!
Please let me know if you are ready to nominate a Christchurch "event
organiser" and I can set up corresponding permissions on meetup.com
I might come, and if I do I can usually be convinced to talk :) - I'm
out in rangiora so its ~40m in and out, and we have a very young
daughter who -only- goes to sleep if I put her down, so the
logicistics of evening things get.... interesting.
That said, I'm *interested*, just not able to guarantee attendance ;)
One benefit of doing that is other people in Chch who are not on this
list will have the proposed event suggested to them. Meetup.com uses
lots of tagging to give people suggestions of interesting things to
do.
However, the main thing is to be able to minimise the number of "+1 me
too" emails while getting an accurate representation of interest.

Ok, I've asked permission from the department so we'll wait and see on that one. I've also had a positive response to one of our best lecturers coming along and talking about what we do with Python (and some of the cool stuff he's done with it).
I guess I'm organising it then? Unless I am stepping on someone elses toes here? That wasn't my intention... or unless someone else wants to do it : )

I'd be keen to attend, should be able to rustle up some interest with other people at work as well :)

Couple of weeks ago I had a chat with Kevin Alcock, who picked up
organizing the usual once a month, Friday evening meetups after Tim,
but we didn't make any concrete plan for restart of our meetups.
I appreciate that Steve took initiative and most importantly found a
venue! I have my fingers crossed & hope that you get the permission
from the department.
Considering that ChCh group used to be the most active NZPUG group
back in the pre-quake days the current limbo is pretty surreal :-/

Hi Marek... Say hi to Kevin from me... I used to work with him years ago... or just get him along too...
And yes, it seems like the department will be happy to have us use one of the rooms, or the lecture theatre, in Erskine... so I guess all we need now are some people to talk, some pizza and a date.
Sooner rather than later? Next Friday evening? 7pm? (I'll have to confirm the date with uni of course, but it should be fine).
Also, Danny (assuming you're following this)... Looks like I'm it for now... so add me to whatever list you need to : )
Cheers
Steve
PS: Marek, this is where you say, "Yes, of course I'll talk about *insert topic here*"

How about Friday 6 June 2012? Our meetups used to be on first Friday
of a month. Last one we had was on Sept 3 2010. I think it would make
sense to continue the tradition. Thoughts?
Yes, of course I'll talk about Python, however, considering I am still
trying to put together a proposal for a KiwiPyCon talk, this needs to
wait until the second meetup :-)
Perhaps the first "restart" meetup could have a talk from the lecturer
you mentioned?
I know many of you are wondering when I am going to propose this. The
wait is finally over! So, I am assuming there is a pub around Uni
where we could go for a pint and talk more Python over beer? ;-)

I think they only let students or uni staff into the pub but maybe a group with one staff person is ok. Sometimes I don't understand why they make it so hard for themselves to make more money ... :-)

There is always the bar at the Lone Star at Church Cnr, which is pretty close to campus. The Foundry (the student bar) is world renound for warm flat beer at stupid prices surrounded by noisy drunk students so even if the rules allowed it (I'm not sure what the deal is there) I'd be too embarrased to take anyone there anyway.
As to the first Friday of the month, I will be away... so while thats a poor excuse not to have it - I'd prefer to do it when I can be there : ) ...at least for this time around anyway. Besides, you'll need someone to let you in.
