I have played briefly with Python once or twice, but would like to meet up
with people in christchurch who are in the nzpug. Is there still an active
Christchurch chapter anymore?
There is a thread on the list from a month or two ago where we were
discussing restarting monthly meetups, but it didn't happen.
Personally, I don't have any time to start organizing the meetups. I
am not sure if Steve who can organize space at Uni is still interested
in organizing it.

@Damon, any type of stable venue would be good. Stable, as in,
everyone would know where monthly meetups are without
asking/confirming/changing/last minute updates/re-scheduling/any other
chaos that discourages people to attend.
Also, someone "carrying a torch" is just as crucial as having stable
venue. By that I mean a person who sends out one reminder a week
before a meetup and a final reminder day before, or on a day of a
meetup. Getting RSVPs can be also required if venue requires to know
the numbers.
@Rob, from memory, number of people attending monthly meetups was
anywhere from 5 up to 15. The number of people attending was related
to topic/talk given at a meetup ie. more people turned up if wider
audience was interested. Less people attended generic "let's talk
about Python" sessions.
Also, Tim who carried a torch for quite some time managed to get
sponsorship so we had a price draw every month. Price was always
Python related book and draw was made out of list of people who
RSVPed. That definitely encouraged people to RSVP :)

I am in touch with a contact at CPIT to see if we can arrange something
there for at least the rest of the year.
Does someone want to set a regular schedule, so that we can see if a room
and access would be available, so what day of week/month and what start/end
times, and estimate of max numbers.

Great to hear! Stable venue would be great first step moving forward
from this 2 year long hiatus.
I propose the following:
- monthly meetup on first Friday of a month. eg. September 7, October
5, November 2, December 7
- number-wise I hope we can see at least 5 and up to 15 people
attending each month
- start 5:05pm til 7pm (official part)
- optional pint, or few and more Python related chat at the Pomeroy's
Pub or whatever is closest to the venue
We'll also need to organize a talk, or two shorter talks for each meeting.
I am happy to give a Python related talk and I certainly hope many
other ChCh Python hackers are happy to do the same. I would love to
see your hands up with your talk proposals :)

Through IITP (Institute of IT Professionals, formally NZCS) and CPIT I have
been offered a room for your use for this year . We need to stick with
dates and times as below – as it is now a timetabled booking at CPIT. We
also need someone to take responsibility for the events so that security
has a point of contact. The room is bigger than needed but you can use half
of it.
Personally while I am interested in Python I am not going to be able to get
along regularly, so we need someone to take a 'leadership' role for
responsibility at the venue.
Now that we have a venue, Sept 7 isn't that far away, so is a speaker/topic
organised?

Sigh. Alright then. Since I proposed the schedule and I am planning to
attend the meetups anyway, I'm putting my hand up and organize this
years meetups :)
@Steve, shall we discuss details re the venue access etc off the list?
Please email me.
Marek
PS: so who is going to give a talk? I am sure there is at least one
person on this list that is in ChCh and doing something exciting in
Python. C'mon :)

I have an abundance of opinions, many of which are backed up by facts
:). Would be happy to put some slides behind them, but - what things
are of most interest to folk here? testing? continuous deployment?
performance horror stories? code review and design? scaling of
services? scaling of developers? networking? api design? ...
I haven't been to many previous sessions, and am a pretty amateur Python
programmer, but for me getting a good handle on some of the best libraries
to use, and in particular GUI programming ... Some basic intro sessions may
also be of interest to secondary and tertiary students.
Another potential topic is v2.x vs v3.x :)
I can try and promote events through my networks, but once events are
finalised if someone can enter them into www.ictevents.co.nz may help build
the attendance as well.

Robert, thank you very much for offering to talk at the meetup on
September 7! ;-)
I wasn't expecting slides, but if you are keen to even do that, that
would be much appreciated!
I'm interested to hear about everything you mentioned, but I realize
we need to start somewhere.
If I can pick something up from the proposed topics then I would like
to hear and definitely also discuss after the official talk
"continuous deployment" and "performance horror stories". Those two
kind of go nicely together in my opinion.
What do you think? Can we aim for that? Anyone to support/oppose my pick?

I am looking through this email thread and I realized that Damon,
Stephen, Andrew, Steve and Mr.Follower all participated in discussion
and even indicated interest to attend, but not everyone RSVPed at
http://www.meetup.com/nz-python-user-group/events/80597172/ , yet.
While we didn't strictly say RSVPs are way too important, or even
mandatory, it would be really nice to have you RSVP at meetup.com just
so it indicates to the speaker (in this case Rob) what audience and
numbers to expect for their talk. Thank you guys and thank you
everyone who already RSVPed!
On a slightly different note, does anyone knows anyone who works for
Tait, Trimble and/or any other Python shop in ChCh? If so, could you
please pass the info (the link above) about the meetup to those
companies?
